The NFL world was caught off guard when the New England Patriots sent wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in a surprise trade. According to insider Tom Pelissero, Houston will send safety Jaylen Reed to New England, along with a draft pick, for Boutte.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s explanation for the move only made the situation more confusing for fans.

Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan shared Vrabel’s take, in which he suggested Boutte likely would have struggled to suit up on game days even without injuries.
“Without injuries, Kayshon probably would’ve been inactive (on game days),” Vrabel said, as per Callahan.
Callahan shared that Vrabel reiterated how often he thanked Boutte throughout the summer. He also called the move “probably” the best outcome for everyone involved.
Vrabel’s blunt assessment quickly caught the attention of fans online.
One fan summed up the disbelief, writing, “That is one of the craziest things that has ever come out of Vrabel’s mouth and I honestly don’t believe it.”

The reaction continued to build as more fans weighed in on Vrabel’s comments.
One supporter dismissed the explanation entirely, writing, “There’s no way this is true lol.”

The reactions to Vrabel’s comments become easier to understand when looking at Boutte’s recent production. The 24-year-old wide receiver delivered his best NFL season in 2025, catching 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns across 14 regular-season games.
He averaged 16.7 yards per reception and earned a 74.4 impact score, ranking No. 40 in PFN’s WR Impact Rankings.

Fans understandably struggled to accept Vrabel’s suggestion. One fan bluntly wrote, “That’s insane.”
However, New England’s receiver room had changed this offseason after the additions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. As a result, Boutte’s role became less certain, while trade rumors followed him through much of the offseason.
Meanwhile, Houston now offers a clear opportunity for Boutte. Jayden Higgins’ ACL injury created a major opening opposite Nico Collins. Tank Dell and Jaylin Noel should also contribute, although injuries have affected both players. Therefore, Boutte can now compete for a larger role alongside Collins and quarterback C.J. Stroud.
