Friday was another day of talking about the scandal involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini. The NFL offseason is in full force, and there’s nothing major happening. As such, with the developments reported by TMZ this week, the controversy escalated further.
Mike Florio Raises Concerns on Mike Vrabel’s Coaching Ability Following Scandal
The season doesn’t start until September. For Vrabel and the New England Patriots, there’s more than enough time for the scandal to go away. However, in the age of social media, it looks extremely unlikely that the coach will be able to just shake things off and go to work.
This concern was raised by Mike Florio in a segment on Friday’s “Pro Football Talk” show. Florio, who has made many comments about the situation, noted how the controversy has spilled into Patriots territory, with the coach missing Day 3 of the 2026 draft. He called the situation “weird” and revealed he’s unsure Vrabel will be able to be at his best:
“This personal issue has become a football issue by virtue of Mike Vrabel issuing two statements during draft week and missing the third day of the draft,” Florio said. “There are so many weird things about this… Everywhere he goes, it’s going to be somebody taking his picture. It’s going to be somebody asking the hostile questions.”
“Will this affect the ability of Vrabel to be the absolute best coach that he can be?” Florio added. “There’s gonna be no way of knowing for sure, but I tell you what’s gonna happen: if they start losing games this year, and that schedule’s a lot tougher this year, do you think the talk is going to get louder? All to be determined, all to be seen.”
Missing Day 3 of a draft is almost unheard of for an NFL head coach, especially with New England making the bulk of its selections on Saturday. Vrabel was away from the team after a press conference two days earlier, saying he needed to be close to his family amid what was happening.
The Patriots have made no official comment on the matter, but the players have publicly supported Vrabel. Recently, quarterback Drake Maye said, “I think he’s done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I’m just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready. I know he’s got the right mindset, and I know he’s a great human being… like I said, I love playing for him.”

At this point, a scenario where Vrabel isn’t coaching the Patriots in Week 1 still feels extremely unlikely, as the situation remains a personal matter. Russini, on the other hand, is suffering the most severe repercussions: she resigned from The Athletic before the 2026 NFL Draft, following the scandal.
