‘It’s All Bad for Mike McCarthy’ — NFL Analyst Argues the Steelers HC Is Being Set Up to Fail in Pittsburgh

Yahoo Sports insider Charles Robinson warns that Mike McCarthy is stepping into an all bad situation with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a new era under Mike McCarthy, but not everyone believes the situation is set up for success. Expectations remain high in Pittsburgh, yet the roster and long-term direction present real questions. Charles Robinson, senior NFL writer and insider for Yahoo Sports, highlighted the tension when evaluating McCarthy’s outlook heading into the 2026 season.

Mike McCarthy Steps Into High-Stakes Situation With Pittsburgh Steelers

“I don’t like the situation Mike McCarthy is in,” Robinson said on the “Inside the Coverage” podcast. “We could argue whether or not it’s the worst, but with McCarthy’s age, he’s a win-now coaching hire.”

That framing gets to the heart of the issue. McCarthy, 62, was not brought in to oversee a rebuild. At this stage of his career, the expectation is immediate results, especially for a franchise long associated with stability and consistent competitiveness.

The challenge is that the roster does not align with that timeline. Pittsburgh is caught between a rock and a hard place: competing now and figuring out what comes next. That balancing act becomes even more complicated when compared to Mike Tomlin’s tenure, who remained consistent even during transitional periods.

“Fans can complain about Mike Tomlin all they want, but the second you fall on really hard times, I’m sure there are gonna be some fans who are really upset that Tomlin departs and Mike McCarthy is left trying to stitch it all together,” Robinson added.

That contrast matters. Tomlin’s consistency masked flaws that are now being highlighted. Without that same track record in place, McCarthy inherits both the expectations and the scrutiny, but without the same margin for error.

Aaron Rodgers Decision Already Shapes McCarthy’s Steelers Tenure

The biggest variable hovering over everything is the quarterback situation. Pittsburgh’s continued pursuit of Aaron Rodgers underscores the urgency to find a short-term answer, but it also highlights the lack of a long-term plan.

“Beyond all that, you’re still sitting there staring at this quarterback problem,” Robinson said. “They’re expected to win games. They’re expected to get whatever gas they can out of this aging roster.”

That combination is difficult to manage. An aging core can still produce, but it often requires everything to break right. At the same time, uncertainty at quarterback makes it harder to establish consistency on offense, which puts even more pressure on the coaching staff.

If Rodgers returns to Pittsburgh, which is the overall expectation, the situation becomes even more complex. He raises the ceiling, shortens the timeline, and increases expectations. Every decision becomes tied to immediate results, leaving little room for development or long-term planning.

“They’re expected to somehow make the quarterback situation work with Aaron Rodgers … It’s all bad for Mike McCarthy.”

That final point is the most revealing. McCarthy is stepping into a role where the expectations are high, the roster has limitations, and the most important position remains unsettled. It is not just one issue, but a combination of factors pulling in different directions.

For Pittsburgh, the hope is that experience and structure can steady the transition. For McCarthy, the reality is that success will likely depend on solving problems that were already in place long before he arrived.
