Mike McCarthy Getting Another HC Position In NFL Uncertain
In Dallas, McCarthy’s playoff inconsistency and defensive shortcomings, including a league-worst red-zone efficiency in 2024, ultimately sealed his fate. Penalties and turnovers became persistent issues, starkly contrasting the disciplined play expected from a marquee franchise. And Middlekauff wouldn’t bet even $1000 that he would get another head coaching job in the NFL.
“I think I’d probably say it’s a coin flip. I wouldn’t bet $1,000 that he’s going to be a head coach in 2026, but I wouldn’t bet against it either,” he said on the latest episode of the “3 & Out” podcast.
Middlekauff agreed with the reports that McCarthy is just staying away from the NFL for 2025 and will apply for the interviews later on. However, he felt that McCarthy getting a job would depend on who the other candidates are available in the market.
McCarthy started his NFL coaching career as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive quality control coach in 1993. Two seasons later, he was promoted to the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach in 1995, where he worked until 1998.
McCarthy then spent a year as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach in 1999, where he would later earn his first head coaching gig. He was Green Bay’s head coach from 2006 until he was fired after Week 13 of the 2018 season.
His 125 wins as Packers head coach are the second-most by a coach in franchise history, behind Curly Lambeau (209). He took a year off in 2019 before becoming the head coach of the Cowboys, and after exiting Dallas, he will hope another year away brings another head coaching job in 2026.
