What Happened To Mike Mayock? Examining What the NFL Draft Expert and Former Raiders GM Is Up To Now

Take a look at what longtime NFL Draft expert Mike Mayock is up to since being fired by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mike Mayock was once one of the most trusted voices in NFL Draft coverage, spending 15 years as the lead draft analyst at NFL Network. Known for his sharp evaluations and deep scouting knowledge, he became a go-to source for fans and front offices alike during draft season. But after leaving the broadcast booth to become general manager of the Raiders, his career took a much different turn.

Mayock’s tenure as GM had its highs and lows, highlighted by a playoff berth but marred by controversial first-round picks and the fallout from Jon Gruden’s resignation. Since he left the Raiders, Mayock has kept a lower profile, returning to the analyst world on radio and podcasts, and now works as a football evaluation specialist for a sports technology platform.

From Booth to War Room: Mike Mayock’s Journey Through Football and Broadcasting

Mayock played a pivotal role at NFL Network for a decade and a half. The former Boston College Eagles safety was selected in the 10th round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he failed to make the roster and instead joined the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. He later spent the 1982 and 1983 seasons with the New York Giants, appearing in nine games, primarily on special teams.

After a brief stint in real estate, Mayock launched his broadcasting career covering college football for Prime Network, NCAA Productions, Prime Sports Radio and the Big East Conference. He then joined ESPN as a sideline reporter and analyst, covering both the CFL and college football for three seasons. In 1996, he moved to CBS Sports to cover SEC football and the NCAA basketball tournament.

Mayock spent one year covering college football for Fox Sports Net in 2000 before transitioning to ABC Sports for the next four seasons. In 2004, he joined NFL Network as their lead draft analyst, a role he held for 15 seasons, while also hosting “Path to the Draft.” He worked as a color commentator for NFL preseason and postseason broadcasts, as well as “Thursday Night Football.”

From 2010 to 2014, he also served as a broadcaster for NBC’s coverage of Notre Dame football. Mayock left NFL Network in December 2018 when he was hired as general manager of the then-Oakland Raiders, overseeing the team during its move to Las Vegas.

Mayock held the GM position for three seasons. The team improved each year under his watch, culminating in a playoff appearance in 2021, but he was fired after a Wild Card loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. While many assumed his dismissal was tied to Jon Gruden’s midseason resignation, Mayock later said his push to retain interim coach Rich Bisaccia may have contributed to the decision.

After his stint with the Raiders, Mayock returned to media as an NFL analyst for Westwood One Radio and frequently joins his daughter, Leigh Mayock, on her podcast Bleav in Eagles. Despite his reputation as one of the top draft analysts during his NFL Network days, his GM record was mixed. He often missed on early-round picks, though many believe Gruden had final say. Still, Mayock uncovered several hidden gems in later rounds.

These days, in addition to his podcast and radio work, Mayock serves as a football evaluation specialist for SūmerSports.
