At just 38, Mike Macdonald sits on the brink of a Super Bowl appearance as the Seattle Seahawks head coach. Few in NFL history have risen this fast from high school sidelines to guiding one of the league’s premier teams.
Let’s dive deep to know what key stops, defining results, and core beliefs fueled Macdonald’s rise from a young assistant coach to one of the NFL’s most respected leaders?
What is Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald’s Coaching History?
The Seahawks’ head coach, Macdonald, did not arrive in the NFL through shortcuts or hype. According to the Seahawks’ official records, Macdonald’s coaching career spans high school football, elite college programs, and one of the NFL’s most respected defensive organizations before he was hired as Seattle’s head coach in January 2024.
Macdonald began coaching in 2008 at Cedar Shoals High School in Georgia. He worked with linebackers and running backs while learning the fundamentals of teaching and player development.
He joined the University of Georgia in 2010, after a playing career, as a student assistant and was promoted to graduate assistant from 2011 to 2013, gaining early exposure to SEC-level preparation and defensive structure under a major college program.
Macdonald’s NFL entry came in 2014 with the Baltimore Ravens as a defensive coaching intern. From there, he climbed the Ravens’ internal ladder.

He served as a defensive assistant from 2015 to 2016, coached defensive backs in 2017, and then took over the linebackers group from 2018 to 2020. During this stint, Baltimore consistently ranked among the league’s strongest defenses. And Macdonald was deeply involved in weekly game planning and player development.
The 2018 Baltimore defense surrendered only 17.9 points per game, ranking 2nd in the NFL. In 2019, they allowed 17.6 points per game, ranking 3rd in the league for fewest points allowed. In 2020, Baltimore finished the season allowing 18.9 points per game, ranking 2nd in the NFL in scoring defense, behind only one other team. But then Macdonald received a call from Michigan football, and he decided to leave the City of Baltimore.
In 2021, Macdonald stepped away from the NFL to become the defensive coordinator at the Michigan Wolverines. That season proved to be a turning point. Michigan finished with one of the nation’s top defenses, won the Big Ten, and reached the College Football Playoff.
But then, the Ravens brought him back in 2022 as defensive coordinator, and the results were immediate.
Baltimore fielded one of the NFL’s most efficient and aggressive defenses over the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Lamar Jackson’s team finished the 2023 NFL season as a league-leading unit in multiple defensive metrics.
Till then, Macdonald had proved his worth through his success in both College Football and the National Football League, which opened the doors for him to be the head coach in the following NFL season.
Seattle hired Macdonald as head coach in 2024, betting on a young defensive mind with a proven track record of results, and it is paying off. With his head coaching and great play-calling, the Seahawks entered Super Bowl 60 after a 14-3 regular season.
