‘Clumsy, Awkward PR Disaster’ — Mike Florio Rips Conflicting Reports on Mike Vrabel’s Involvement With Patriots During Draft

Mike Florio rips the conflicting reports about Mike Vrabel's draft weekend involvement, calling it a clumsy and awkward PR disaster.

The New England Patriots’ 2026 NFL Draft weekend should have been entirely focused on the future of the franchise’s roster. Instead, the crucial roster-building event was thoroughly overshadowed by the ongoing off-field drama surrounding head coach Mike Vrabel.

Following a highly publicized scandal involving former The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini, Vrabel announced prior to the draft that he would step away during Day 3 to focus on family counseling. However, bizarre and conflicting reports regarding his actual level of involvement during his scheduled absence have sparked intense criticism.

Mike Vrabel’s Draft Weekend PR Mess Keeps Getting Weirder

The confusion began when ESPN NFL insider Peter Schrager reported during Saturday’s draft broadcast that the Patriots were in “constant contact” with Vrabel throughout Day 3 via text and telephone.

The revelation immediately drew ire from across the NFL world. Analysts and fans were quick to point out the sheer absurdity of a head coach being glued to his phone for draft updates while supposedly attending intensive family therapy, with many labeling the counseling announcement as purely performative.

Shortly after the severe social media backlash, Schrager abruptly walked back his initial claim. He posted an update clarifying that while the original plan involved communication, both Vrabel and the team ultimately chose not to interrupt his family time.

Patriots de facto general manager Eliot Wolf later confirmed that the front office had zero contact with their head coach during the final rounds.

For NFL insider Mike Florio, the sudden flip-flopping was just another massive unforced error in a saga already full of them. Florio did not hold back in his assessment of the situation, shifting his focus from the accuracy of the reporting to the staggering incompetence of the broader messaging.

“I’m not here to say that Schrager got it wrong,” Florio stated. “He may have gotten it dead on balls accurate, but if he did, it’s the latest chapter in this clumsy, awkward PR disaster that everyone connected to this mess has responsibility for: Patriots, The Athletic, the crisis communications expert hired by Diana Rousini, formerly of The Athletic and connected to Mike Vrabel through all the photos that got this all started nearly three weeks ago.”

Florio emphasized that the back-and-forth narrative only amplified a controversy the franchise was desperately trying to quiet.

“Everybody screwed this up,” Florio continued. “And the latest screw-up is putting out this idea that Vrabel was in constant contact with the Patriots on the third day of the draft and now having to get out the mop and the bucket and say, ‘Oh, no, no, no, no, he wasn’t. No, he wasn’t. Nothing to see here. Everything is fine. Everything is awesome.’ And then they move on until the next development.”

While New England managed to make six selections on Day 3 without their head coach, the overarching narrative remains firmly fixed on the botched handling of his absence.

As the Patriots attempt to pivot back to football, Florio ominously predicted that the drama in Foxborough is far from over: “And I have a feeling there will be more developments.”
