NFL Insider Predicts Dianna Russini’s Next Move As The Athletic’s Investigation Wraps Up

Mike Florio details why the timing of the forthcoming internal probe forces a tight deadline for Dianna Russini to defend her career.

The Dianna Russini scandal has been on everyone’s mind for the majority of the 2026 NFL offseason. After her alleged relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel got leaked, the veteran reporter resigned from her role at The Athletic.

The Athletic opened an internal investigation, and Russini resigned roughly a week later. But as time for a comprehensive report draws nearer, one insider reveals what the response from Russini could look like.

Dianna Russini Is Racing Against the Clock

Ever since the first pictures got leaked, a ton more evidence has come forward about the scandal. From interview comments to Spotify playlists, nothing has been safe from internet sleuths. However, a lot of the focus has been generated by the public directly.

The sports media, in general, have remained mum on the matter until very recently. Now, as the date for the exposé from The Athletic draws closer, Mike Florio of NBC Sports believes a response from Russini could be on the horizon.

“We will now wait for The Athletic to say whatever it’s going to say,” Florio said.

But, as the wait for their report continues, Florio also outlined two potential scenarios that could play out, depending on how she wants to proceed. The first would be to control the narrative firsthand.

“And there’s always the possibility that Russini is going to jump in and tell her story before The Athletic posts its report,” Florio added.

However, what he considers more likely is the other option.

“I would suspect that she wants to wait and see what The Athletic says before she says what she has to say,” Florio noted.

“But she said nothing since her resignation letter beyond the text messages that were sent to one of The Times reporters before she tried to claw it back as being off the record.”

Maintaining her silence since the story first became public knowledge, there is a chance that she remains mum on the subject matter entirely. But, as a veteran reporter and analyst, the questions are going to follow her until they are directly answered.

After stepping down from her role, any new opportunity that Russini eventually embraces will come with a ton of question marks. And, as the public scrutiny continues, it is going to be hard to avoid the elephant in the room until she reveals her side of the story.

As a result, one of the two possibilities that Florio outlined could end up becoming reality in a matter of months, if not weeks.
