Michael Penix Jr. isn’t just stepping into a starting role with the Atlanta Falcons. He’s stepping into a dream that’s been years in the making. The former Washington Huskies quarterback knows exactly what’s at stake as he prepares to lead one of the NFL’s most passionate fan bases into the 2025 season.
What Does Michael Penix Jr. Want Most in His First Full Season?
That desire for achievement is personal and goes beyond words. Late in the 2024 season, Penix Jr. got a taste of NFL action when he started three games and finished 1-2. He threw for 737 yards and three touchdowns in his final three starts. For a rookie just getting started, those numbers tell a promising story.
The former quarterback for the Washington Huskies now has the keys to one of the NFL’s most eager teams after being chosen by the Atlanta Falcons with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. And Penix Jr. already knows what he has to do.
“Postseason. Got to get into the postseason,” he said. “Seeing the Dirty Bird Nest and all the little highlights and fans. Man, they get rocking whenever we winning. So, I definitely want to get back to that. Winning football games so we can have the city turnt.”
However, Penix Jr. knows that more needs to be done. In a weak NFC South, Atlanta missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record in 2024. Many believe it’s time for someone else to take over after Tampa Bay dominated the division for the last four seasons, and the Falcons are in a prime position to do precisely that.
But for Penix Jr., it’s not just about numbers. It’s about connection.
“I’m not always that big vocal guy,” he admitted in a recent conversation with Falcons legend Michael Vick. “I want to get to know my teammates because then, once you get to know them, now you know how to lead those guys.”
How Will Penix Jr. Lead Atlanta’s Talented Offense?
This approach makes sense when you consider the talent surrounding him. Penix Jr. steps into an offense loaded with playmakers like Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeier, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. But it’s not just skill that will make or break this team. Leadership, timing, and trust matter just as much, and he appears dedicated to all three.
Additionally, he brings a unique flair as a left-handed quarterback, something Falcons fans haven’t seen since the Vick era. When asked if being left-handed ever felt like a limitation, Penix Jr. didn’t hesitate with his response: “Man, roll me out to the right. Do this, do that, it don’t matter, man, I can do it.”
That confidence speaks to something bigger. Penix Jr. offers something fresh for a city that’s been craving stability and excitement at quarterback since Matt Ryan’s departure. He’s confident, grounded, and ready to deliver what Atlanta has been waiting for.
