Michael Gallup or CeeDee Lamb: Who has the better game in Week 17?

Andy Dalton is coming off a strong performance, and although it hasn’t been against great defenses, the Cowboys offense is really coming around at the right time. Cowboys WRs CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup have both profited from a Dalton resurgence. Additionally, the offensive line isn’t great and has been walloped by injuries this year, but that group has also improved of late.

The Cowboys offense has started to come together

We know what kind of skill position talent Dallas has. Ezekiel Elliott is coming off maybe his best game of the season. He looked much more like the runner we have seen the past few years with his power and burst, something that hasn’t been evident for most of 2020. Tony Pollard is a great explosive complement to Elliott. He features into the gameplan every week now. And the Cowboys’ top three wide receivers can rival any three in the league.

Last week against Philadelphia’s decimated secondary, the Cowboys put up 37 points, with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup producing 121 receiving yards. Gallup’s eight targets led the team while Cooper was thrown at six times, and CeeDee Lamb was targeted on five occasions, finishing that game with 65 yards and a touchdown. Michael Gallup found the end zone twice against the Eagles. All three of the Dallas wide receivers ended up in the top 20 for fantasy in Week 16.

The previous week against the 49ers, Dallas produced 41 points. It was Lamb that led this trio in targets with seven. Lamb and Cooper were thrown at just seven times between the two of them.

CeeDee Lamb has had an impressive rookie season

For the season, CeeDee Lamb has seven more targets (104 to 97) than Michael Gallup, but 14 more catches and 98 more yards. Both wideouts have scored five receiving touchdowns. Gallup is targeted downfield a little more and is the better deep threat. However, Lamb is better with the ball in his hands after the catch. Dallas has handed it to him on nine occasions this year.

Lamb has also been one of the NFL’s most productive receivers on third downs this season. But since Dalton has taken over, he has shown an affinity for Gallup.

The stakes cannot be higher for Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, and the Cowboys WRs this week

In Week 17 against the Giants, Dallas has to pull out all stops to get the victory. The winner of that game will temporarily be atop the NFC East, at least until the outcome of the Washington game vs. the Eagles is settled. If the Football Team wins, they host a playoff game next week. If they lose, the winner of New York/Dallas will have that honor.

The Cowboys have won three in a row, while New York has dropped their last three games. Dallas has also won seven straight against the Giants. Dallas has scored 30 or more points in three straight games, and this coaching staff has done a good job of creating a Dalton-friendly offense.

The Giants’ defense isn’t an easy matchup. New York doesn’t have a premier edge rusher. However, they have a great deal of power, mass, and physicality on their defensive line’s interior. That group can really push the pocket and can own the line of scrimmage against the run or pass.

What kind of coverage will Michael Gallup and the Cowboys WRs see this week?

In terms of coverage, the Giants are a heavy zone team. They mostly play a version of Cover 2 or Cover 3. However, their top cornerback, James Bradberry, often aligns across from whoever the Cowboys decide is the most dangerous WR. In this case, that is likely to be Amari Cooper. Bradberry has been exceptional this year and is someone Dalton needs to be careful throwing at.

In general, wide receivers have not put up great numbers against the Giants this season, especially during the second half of the year. In particular, Cooper could be in for some tough sledding, and Bradberry dominated him back in Week 5. Michael Gallup should mostly see Isaac Yiadom, and CeeDee Lamb will get a heavy dose of Julian Love, who has allowed a lot of production of late, from the slot.

But if you can only pick one for fantasy this week, Gallup or Lamb, which is the better choice? That is a tough one for sure. If you are looking for a home run and can afford some volatility, go with Gallup. Yet, if you are content with just hitting a double, Lamb is your guy. In the end, both could do well in Week 17 but stay away from Cooper.
