Micah Parsons has shaken up the NFL just weeks before the 2025 regular season. The Dallas Cowboys’ top defender, once the future cornerstone of the franchise, has officially asked for a trade and told the team he doesn’t want to stay in Dallas. With each side digging in, fans and analysts are left asking: Will one of the league’s best pass rushers actually leave the Cowboys, or is this standoff just getting started?
Why Did Micah Parsons Request a Trade From the Dallas Cowboys?
Of all the unresolved contract disputes around the NFL, none looms larger than what’s going on between Parsons and the Cowboys. Parsons has made it public: he wants out. The team, meanwhile, is holding firm and doesn’t want to move their superstar edge rusher, turning the situation into a high-stakes standoff as the 2025 season approaches.
The friction started after Parsons grew frustrated with the lack of a long-term contract offer. Now the opening point for a new deal has reportedly climbed past the $40 million mark, making negotiations even tougher. Dallas doesn’t seem to be in any rush, and Parsons has stopped pretending he’s satisfied. The idea of trading for him is a huge ask; any team would have to give up a ton of draft picks and hand out a record-setting contract right away.
As NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported, things between Parsons and the Cowboys aren’t moving forward. Talks haven’t even reached the stage where both sides are trading real offers, which could easily delay Parsons’ preparation for the 2025 campaign.

Pelissero said, “There has been very little in terms of actual negotiation taking place, negotiation being the exchange of bargaining proposals, not merely talks surrounding the contract. Remains to be seen exactly what direction this thing goes. To this point, the Cowboys have not had anything resembling serious trade calls.”
This puts Dallas in a tough spot, opening the door for Parsons to hold out; maybe even into Week 1, just like Chris Jones did while negotiating with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. But for Parsons, the frustration is even deeper because he’s openly said he wants to move on from the team.
Pelissero added, “There would obviously be a market, but if you were going to trade Micah Parsons, something the Cowboys at least have discussed internally going back to last season, you’d like to think you would have done that back in April and not right before the season.”
What Does Parsons’ Contract Showdown Mean for the Cowboys and the NFL?
Parsons’ situation is unique because of his track record: the four-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro has notched at least 12 sacks every year while quickly becoming one of the league’s most feared defenders. His fast rise has put him in the same tier as T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett, both of whom have already landed $40 million-per-year deals, with Watt currently holding the top spot at $41 million per year. That sets up Parsons’ next contract to be even bigger, which is one more complication for everyone involved.

Looking back, things might have played out differently if the Cowboys had worked this out at the end of the 2023 season, when contract figures were said to be closer to $35 million per year. Now, both sides face a difficult choice. Whatever happens next, both Parsons and the team need a resolution that won’t send the 2025 season off the rails.
