Micah Parsons is a cornerstone of the Dallas Cowboys’ defense, and without a doubt, the Cowboys’ defense severely underperformed this past NFL season. The Cowboys are going into the 2025 NFL season with a new head coach, Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer was promoted from Cowboys’ offensive coordinator to head coach and will have a tall task set before him to bring the Cowboys back to sufficient standards for Jerry Jones.
Parsons, who recognizes that work on the defensive side of the ball is needed following a 7-10 finish in the NFC East, has begun preparing this offseason with some fellow Cowboy teammates.

Micah Parsons Working With Lance Deane “Let’s Go Guru”
On Saturday, Parsons shared on his Instagram Story that he linked up with Cowboy teammates Osa Odighizuwa, Denzel Daxon, Earnest Brown IV, and Luiji Vilain to work with noted trainer and Susquehanna Township High School Athletic Director Lance Deane, with the caption “Let’s go guru.”

It will be interesting to see how much this work will impact the Cowboys’ defense, which surrendered the 12th-most yards in the NFL last year with 4,045 and tied for giving up the sixth-most touchdowns with 28.
In the video, Parsons and crew are working specifically on pass-rushing drills, and pass rush is an area that will need to be highlighted despite having 52 total sacks last season. However, they have lost a longtime Cowboy pass rush attack member, as DeMarcus Lawrence departed this offseason to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Long Road Ahead
While the defense was only one piece of a more significant problem on the field for the Cowboys last season, it is safe to say that seeing members of the defense take part in some extra assistance has given the Cowboys faithful some hope. The group is talented and will be coached by former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus this year.
While Eberflus’ tenure in Chicago did not end well, he has successfully focused on one side of the ball in his coaching history. He will begin his second stint in Dallas after serving as their linebackers coach from 2011-2017 before becoming the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts.
His tenure with the Colts led to quite a defensive turnaround in Indianapolis, which earned Eberflus the Bears’ head coaching gig.
The key difference between Eberflus’s Cowboys tenure this time around, aside from his title, is that he did not have Micah Parsons the last time he was in “Jerry World.” Parsons is an exceptional talent and is bound to be a cornerstone in the front seven portion of Eberflus’s defense.
The new Cowboys defensive coordinator probably has a smile on his face seeing the face of his defense putting in the work and bringing some of his teammates with him.
The Cowboys face scrutiny year after year due to their lack of a deep playoff run in recent years. Perhaps with Parsons stepping up on the defensive side as a leader, combined with the return of Eberflus and his successes as a defensive coordinator, this could be the year the Cowboys can make that deep run.
They will need the help of their offense and special teams unit, but Parsons will do his part, putting in work with the “guru.”
