For Miami Dolphins fans who hoped that the team would get off to a good start this season, that hasn’t happened at all. The Dolphins are 0-2 in the young 2025 NFL season and have not looked good.
It’s so bad that the Dolphins decided to hold a players-only meeting. When that happens, just two games into a season, that does not bode well for any NFL squad. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t met his standards, and wide receiver Tyreek Hill appears ready to get out of town.
What’s Happening with the Miami Dolphins?
While players usually keep details of any players-only meetings, that’s not been the case in Miami. What happened at this meeting between all the Dolphins players?
NFL Insider Albert Breer opened up about the situation in a clip from “The Breer Report.”
“I think the reason for the Dolphins’ struggles right now is the natural point they’re at as an organization,” Breer said.
“And we’ve talked about this being a natural reset for the team, and that is where they are. I’m not sure that under any circumstance that they would’ve come out of the first two games 2-0 based on some of the things they did in the offseason to change over their roster.”
Breer said he believed that the Dolphins did the right thing by resetting their team roster in the offseason. Yet he also pointed out there are “bigger picture questions” for Miami coming out of their first two games. Breer pointed out “the no-show in Week One” and discipline issues that hurt the Dolphins in Week Two.
All of that leads to more questions about the Miami coaching staff and its front office.
“So, we can dive into those by diving in, to begin with, with the players-only meeting that was held last week,” he said. “What was said in that meeting? Well, what was said in that meeting was that there was the captains addressing their teammates and, basically, preaching a message of accountability.”
Where’s The Accountability in Miami?
“And that message of accountability wasn’t about being accountable to the organization, it was about being accountable to each other and being accountable to themselves,” Breer said. “And this can be one of those things where, at the end, for a coach, sometimes the players will say these sorts of things.
“‘We need to do what’s best for ourselves right now,’ and the real thing that the captains were trying to get across to their teammates here was that the NFL will not judge you based on your circumstances, the NFL will not base you on your coaching,” Breer said.
“The NFL will look at the tape and evaluate you and, to some degree, evaluate you in a vacuum almost regardless of what’s going on around you.”
Is the Dolphins’ Point Differential a Cause for Concern?
After two games, the Dolphins have a minus-31 point differential between their offense’s scoring and the number of points the Miami defense is giving up. That’s not a good sign of balance across both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Tagovailoa has gone 40-for-55 passing for 429 passing yards and three touchdown passes. He also has one rushing attempt for seven yards. McDaniel knows that the pressure, like the Sword of Damacles, is hanging over his head. The Dolphins will be on a big stage on “Thursday Night Football” as they will be on the road against quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, who are off to a 2-0 start.
If Tagovailoa can’t get his act together and McDaniel coaches another stinker against Buffalo, there’s a chance that Miami might see it as a chance to fire him. Of course, the Dolphins will look to avoid a 0-3 start. Any slow start to a season gets scrutinized a lot. Yet, Tagovailoa has had to deal with well-known concussion issues.
Hill was visibly upset during Miami’s 33-27 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, September 14. He wants to be a part of the Miami offense as a key receiver for Tagovailoa. Hill might be on the trading block himself. This all adds up to an awful start to the season for the Dolphins. They need to get their act together now before the whole season slips away.
