Wofford Finds Quick Replacement After Former HC Gets Fired Over $600 NCAA Violation

Wofford moves quickly to replace Dwight Perry as men’s basketball coach with an alumnus amid recent NCAA violations and program turmoil.

Wofford Terriers acted swiftly to address its head coaching vacancy following the dismissal of Dwight Perry amid controversy. Perry, who guided the Terriers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in March 2025, was fired less than two months before the 2025-26 season over housing and meal plan eligibility violations involving players.

His departure, announced September 12, followed the tenure of Jay McAuley, who resigned after an NCAA probe revealed he forced players to practice on days off. Wofford moved quickly to secure a replacement for its basketball program.

With Dwight Perry Out, Who Is Wofford’s New Coach Ahead of the 2025–26 Season?

Wofford College is set to bring in Virginia Tech assistant and alumnus Kevin Giltner as its next men’s basketball coach following the dismissal of Perry. Sources told CBS Sports that, barring an unexpected last-minute development, Giltner will assume the role.

The move comes just over a week after Perry and associate head coach Tysor Anderson were fired on September 12 amid an investigation into alleged improper benefits involving players.

Those benefits were estimated between $84 and $108 for each player, which places the approximate total near $600. Wofford self-reported the violations, and though concerns initially arose about possible suspensions, all affected players have since been reinstated, their lawyer confirmed.

Giltner, who played at Wofford from 2008-12, was part of two NCAA Tournament teams under coach Mike Young. He also spent six years on Wofford’s staff after graduating, gaining more than a decade of coaching experience alongside Young.

Perry’s firing came less than two months before the 2025-26 season, despite leading the Terriers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in March 2025. His dismissal followed Wofford’s earlier coaching challenges, including the resignation of Jay McAuley in 2023.

McAuley stepped down after an NCAA investigation found he forced players to practice on what should have been days off, triggering a one-year probation for the program.

Wofford, with fewer than 2,000 undergraduates, is considered one of the more challenging coaching positions in the Southern Conference. The program now faces the task of stabilizing operations under Giltner’s leadership.

The appointment of Giltner reflects Wofford’s focus on continuity and stability. By bringing in someone who understands the program’s history and culture, the Terriers hope to move past recent controversies and maintain competitiveness in the Southern Conference.
