Wisconsin vs. Illinois Prediction and Preview
The Badgers have split their last four games after a 14-5 start, with three of those four games being decided by a single possession. They seem to only play games that come down to the wire, regardless of the talent of the opposition, something that can be both a blessing and a curse come tournament time.
The Illini are, for my money, more talented, but moving at the pace that they do, it does open up the opportunity for a tight one. Our metrics like both of these teams slightly more than the public, so if you are enjoying these predictions (and believe me, they are coming in bulk as we near March), get used to propaganda going both directions.
The key factor here is that Wisconsin makes its free throws at as high a rate as any of the truly competitive teams, and that I’m not sure we see that strength on display in this spot.

Illinois is one of the best defenses in the nation at not sending their opponents to the stripe, and that is what allows them to thrive in tight situations. Basketball is a hard enough game as it is, and if those “free” points aren’t available, the offensive talent of the Illini has a way of winning out.
They’ve been led in scoring by a different player in three straight games, and their four who average over a dozen points all shoot over 80% from the stripe. I like this game to be tight at the under-eight-minute timeout, with the home team showing more poise down the stretch.
Prediction: Illinois 81, Wisconsin 74
