Preview of Kentucky vs. UNC
Both programs enter this game seeking a signature win after suffering losses to a common opponent, Michigan State.
Kentucky, favored at home, boasts one of the deepest and most balanced rosters in college basketball, a fact that remains true despite the early criticisms Mark Pope and the Wildcats faced following the loss to Louisville.
However, the Wildcats have struggled with physicality and transition defense in their losses to Louisville and Michigan State. They need a big performance from their frontcourt, including 7-foot freshman Malachi Moreno, to control the paint.
North Carolina counters with an elite freshman in forward Caleb Wilson, who is dominating with 19.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
UNC’s defense is a national strength, particularly inside the arc, but they’ve been hampered by inconsistent guard play and the absence of injured guard Seth Trimble.
Trimble, whose skills and leadership the team was counting on, unfortunately got injured in a gym session halfway through November.
“I don’t have a definitive answer in regards to when he’s going to come back, but he’s progressing fast and really well,” UNC’s head coach Hubert Davis said via Tar Heel 247. “He’s shooting, he’s dribbling, he’s conditioning. And so it’s in a really good spot, and I’m looking forward to when he can get back out there on the floor.”
Kentucky and UNC have met 43 times, with the Tar Heels leading the series 25-18 overall. However, the Wildcats have an 8-6 edge at home and have won their last two clashes.
Kentucky has not faced North Carolina under Pope, while Davis is 0-2 in his first five seasons in Chapel Hill.
