Overview of Houston-Kansas Matchups
When the Cougars and Jayhawks clash, it will pit two of the best college basketball coaches in America against each other.
Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson has his team on the road to a potential NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearance. Entering Monday night’s game at Allen Fieldhouse, the Cougars are 23-4 overall, 11-3 in Big 12 Conference play.
Kansas head coach Bill Self also wants his Jayhawks in the “Big Dance” after the Big 12 Conference Tournament comes to an end. This season, the Jayhawks are 20-7 overall, 10-4 in Big 12 play. Both the Cougars and Jayhawks, though, are looking up at the Arizona Wildcats, who are atop the Big 12 standings.
The Cougars’ offense is led by Kingston Flemings, who has shown his ball-handling skills are elite in college basketball. Flemings is averaging 16.6 points and 5.2 assists per game, and shooting 49.0% from the floor. Sampson knows that his offense needs to go through Flemings if they are going to succeed against Kansas.
As for the Jayhawks, Darryn Peterson will have all eyes on his performance. Peterson, the freshman sensation on the court, is averaging 19.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. He’s shooting 48.0% from the floor, too.
But teammate Flory Bidunga is scoring 14.6 points per game and is shooting 66.4% from the floor. Melvin Council Jr. is averaging 5.1 assists per game for Kansas.
Both teams know that results matter, especially as Big 12 regular-season play begins to wind down. How the Cougars and Jayhawks put things together on Monday night will be watched very closely by the college basketball world on nationwide TV.
