What Did Tyran Stokes Mean by ‘Duck the Smoke?’

During a recent video, analyst Aaron Torres broke down the significance of Stokes’ latest comments. The timing and location made the remarks even more intriguing — the Louisville native was back home for an NIL event when he delivered his most revealing statements yet.

Stokes laid out exactly what he wants from his future program. “I also want a school that’s not going to duck the smoke,” he said. “That’s it. I don’t like ducking the smoke, so I want everybody on the schedule. If I could get North Carolina, Duke, anybody on the schedule, that’s all I want.”

The phrase “duck the smoke” immediately caught Torres’s attention because both Louisville coach Pat Kelsey and Kentucky coach Mark Pope have used nearly identical language.

Kelsey previously stated, “What I do want to do is make sure that when we get to the NCAA tournament and the selection committee is looking at us, they know one thing. Louisville did not duck the smoke.”

Meanwhile, Pope had said, “You don’t come to Kentucky if you’re trying to run from the smoke.”

Why Does This Quote Matter for Stokes’ Recruitment?

Torres acknowledged the potential significance while staying cautious about reading too much into the wording.

“Was he that aware to specifically sit on that quote and say, ‘Well, Pat Kelsey said this or Mark Pope said this. I’m going to quote him verbatim?” Torres questioned. “So, to me, probably doesn’t mean all that much. But I’ll also say this, maybe it does.”

Despite the apparent Louisville connection in Stokes’ language choice, Torres stuck to his previous prediction.

“Listen, if I had to pick today, I’d probably lean Kentucky,” Torres stated, while confirming his belief that “it is going to be a Louisville versus Kentucky recruitment.”

The battle for Stokes continues to generate intense interest from both fan bases, with supporters from each program analyzing every public appearance for hints about his decision. His latest comments have only added fuel to the speculation surrounding one of the most closely watched recruitments in college basketball.
