Thad Matta has announced his retirement from coaching, calling time on a two-decade career of leading Division I programs. The 58-year-old’s decision comes only a few days after the program’s athletic director said he would return next season.

Some college basketball fans were surprised by the news, with CBS Sports reporter Matt Norlander pointing out the remarkable turnaround in coaching that is taking place across the country’s colleges.

Former Villanova head coach Jay Wright hailed Matta for a remarkable career. “Congratulations to Thad Matta. An incredible coach and a great guy,” he wrote on X.

College basketball writer Michael DeRosa also paid tribute to Matta, who ended his coaching career with an overall record of 502-223. “Congratulations to Coach Matta on a legendary career. It didn’t end the way Bulldog fans wanted it to, but it’s hard to take away from everything he has done in the sport, including his 500th win this year,” he wrote.

Butler women’s basketball head coach Austin Parkinson also thanked Matta. “Congrats Coach Matta on a legendary career! I will be forever grateful getting the opportunity to work down the hall from you & pick your brain from time to time. You are the best,” he wrote.

ESPN’s Sam Block highlighted some of Matta’s remarkable runs as head coach over the years. “24-8 season at Butler. 26-6 season at Xavier. 34-3 season at Ohio State. Never got the respect he deserved. Thad Matta is a College Hoops LEGEND. Enjoy retirement, Coach,” he wrote.

NBC anchor Matt Barnes hailed Matta as one of the true greats of college sports, writing, “One of the great guys in college sports. So giving of his time, talent and treasure while at Ohio State to so many great causes. Not to mention all the on-court success as well. Wishing the best to him, Barbara and the kids.”

Matta began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with Indiana State in 1990. He got his first head coaching job at Butler in 2000 and then enjoyed stints with Xavier and Ohio State before returning to Butler in 2022.
Over his career, Matta won three Big Ten Coach of the Year awards and posted a 24-13 record in the NCAA Division I Tournament, including a runner-up finish in 2007.
