The eighth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers entered Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio, expecting to secure a victory over the unranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State guard John Mobley Jr. and his teammates had other plans.
Behind Mobley’s 21 points and Bruce Thornton’s 20, the Buckeyes pulled off the upset, defeating Purdue 82-74 and delivering a headline result for college basketball on Sunday afternoon.

Seth Davis, longtime college basketball reporter and co-founder of Hoops HQ, also weighed in, saying, “Ohio State is a prime example of why records vs Quads 1 and 2 matter so much with bubble teams. A win would make the Buckeyes 2-10 vs Quad 1 but 8-11 vs Quads 1 and 2. Ranked 46 in WAB. More work to do but for the first time in a long time the Buckeyes have life.”

The college basketball media account T3, posting on X, likewise emphasized the significance of the Buckeyes’ victory.
“Big Bubble Win in Columbus!” the account posted. “Ohio State defeats Purdue at home, the best win on its resume to date. John Mobley’s impact was phenomenal in this game. Ohio State will enter the field as a last 4 in team as of today. Still need a 2-0 week next week to remain there.”
