When Purdue quietly added Israeli guard Omer Mayer to its roster in April, it looked like a classic long-term play: an international prospect with upside brought in to develop behind a loaded backcourt. But Mayer has wasted no time flipping that narrative.
After many impressive summer showings, he is no longer just a project. He is becoming a name to know, and perhaps a reason to reevaluate Purdue’s preseason ceiling.
Gary Parrish Questions if Purdue Is Underrated After Omer Mayer’s Breakout Summer
On a recent episode of the “Eye on College Basketball” podcast, CBS Sports analyst Gary Parrish, the voice behind the network’s “Top 25 and 1” rankings, questioned whether Purdue might be undervalued at No. 4 following the addition of Omer Mayer.
Initially, Parrish admitted that Mayer’s commitment did not seem significant enough to alter his rankings.
“Back in April, Purdue gets a commitment from Omer Mayer, an Israeli guard,” Parrish said. “At the time, like, you know, I can text Jonathan Givony and see what’s up. But like, does this really move the needle in any sort of meaningful way? And I don’t think I impacted the Top 25 and 1 because of that commitment. I don’t think that moved the needle.”

However, Mayer’s standout showing at the FIBA U-19 World Cup and invitation to the prestigious Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp have shifted the narrative.
“Well, then he balled out in the FIBA U-19 World Cup. He gets invited to Chris Paul camp. What if this guy’s really, like, one of the five best freshmen in the country?”
Given that possibility, Parrish acknowledged he may have underestimated the Boilermakers.
“I might have them too low. That’s what I’m trying to tell you,” he added.
Omer Mayer Had a Summer To Remember
Mayer turned heads across Europe this summer with a string of standout performances for Israel in both the FIBA U19 World Cup and the FIBA U20 EuroBasket Championship.
At the U19 World Cup in Switzerland, Omer Mayer averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.0 steals in four games, ranking second in scoring and ninth in steals. He shot 38.2 percent from three and had the tournament’s top individual performance, dropping 33 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals in a comeback win over Cameroon.

Mayer also scored 24 points in the opener against Switzerland before missing the final two games with a minor finger injury.
A week later, he joined Israel’s U20 squad and played a key role in a sixth-place finish at the EuroBasket Championship. Mayer averaged 16.7 points and 5.1 assists per game, ranking fifth in the tournament in assists and second in three-pointers made, shooting 37.3 percent from deep.

Across 11 FIBA games this summer, Mayer compiled averages of 17.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting 37.6% from three-point range.
Mayer’s summer campaign has solidified his status as one of the most intriguing freshmen entering college basketball this season. Parrish is taking notice and believes Mayer is poised to carry that momentum into the college season.
