Freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. helped his No. 12 Louisville Cardinals deliver one of the standout performances of the early college basketball season on Tuesday. The Cardinals overcame a second-half surge by the No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats to secure a 96-88 win.
The win snapped Louisville’s three-game losing streak against its in-state rival. If the Cardinals hope to reach their season goals, Brown is expected to play a big role in their success.
Fans Show Support for Mikel Brown Jr. After His Phenomenal Performance Against Kentucky
On Tuesday night, Brown topped the scoring chart with 29 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Louisville held a 78-58 lead with nearly 12 minutes left before Kentucky tried to mount a comeback, but Brown scored the Cardinals’ next five points to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Brown’s 29 points were the most by a Louisville freshman since Edgar Sosa posted 31 in a 2007 NCAA round-of-32 game. With this performance, his per-game averages now sit at 19.3 points and 6.7 assists.
“I really don’t look into my stat line,” Brown said postgame. “The biggest thing for me is coming out with the win. Whatever I’ve got to do to get that win, I’m going to do it.”
Following Louisville’s win, fans have flooded social media with high praise for Brown.
“Let me start by saying I really like Kentucky this year. That said. I’ve seen so many delusional Kentucky fans acting like Mikel Brown isn’t “that guy.” Let me update you. He’s THAT GUY. Carry on,” a fan said.

Kentucky is the highest-ranked team Louisville has defeated since a win over then-No. 3 Duke in 2020. The eight-point win over UK also marked the Cardinals’ largest margin since their 89-75 win at Lexington in 2008.
Following Tuesday’s win, Brown responded to the fans’ enthusiasm by crediting Louisville’s optimistic fan base for the win. He said that whenever the Cardinals players are out in public or in class, fans constantly say, “Beat UK.”
Brown also said that meeting fans’ expectations with the Kentucky win “means a lot” to the entire Louisville team. His squad will be at home against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday.
