Matt Painter Weighs In on Braden Smith’s ‘Sacrifice’ After Purdue Guard Explains Decision To Stay

Matt Painter praises Braden Smith’s loyalty as the All-American guard rejects bigger NIL deals to return to Purdue and chase a national title.

Braden Smith could have chased bigger paychecks and pro opportunities, but instead, he’s sticking around West Lafayette. Purdue coach Matt Painter isn’t shy about what that means for his program.

After Smith, an All-American guard, confirmed he’ll return for another year, Painter called out his sacrifice, loyalty, and commitment. Passing up on serious financial offers and potential pro contracts, Smith chose to extend his college career, making Purdue fans wonder: Is this the move that pushes the Boilermakers over the top?

Why Did Braden Smith Choose Purdue Over Big-Money Offers?

Smith’s call to stay wasn’t made lightly. Turning down more lucrative offers, the Boilermakers’ point guard made what Painter calls a loyal and selfless choice. The coach clarified that Smith’s decision didn’t happen in a vacuum; everyone on the roster, especially those logging major minutes, had to sacrifice for the team’s bigger goals.

According to Painter, even the guys who play the most and score have given up financial opportunities, showing just how deep loyalty runs in this locker room. “If you’re going to be a special program and have a special season, everyone has to sacrifice. Even the guys that play the most, that score the most. But already every single one of those guys have financially sacrificed,” he said.

Smith admitted bigger NIL deals were available, but what mattered to him most was the trust and relationships built at Purdue. “Just the people here. I think that’s the biggest thing. The coaching staff, like Coach Payne, like what he’s built here, what he’s always built. He’s a man of his word and he does it the right way,” Smith explained.

The junior guard also credited Painter’s honesty as a game-changer throughout his time with the Boilermakers. “He told me on the first day I came on campus, if you are better than the other person, you work hard and you prove that, you will play no matter your age. I’ve done that and look where it’s at.”

On the court, Smith said what sets Painter apart is how much he values his players’ input. “He listens to us. Like in the huddles during the game, we’ll say, hey coach, give it to Trey here, he’s got eight in a row. Hey, Fletch hit two, let’s get him a third. He listens to us if we ever have to say anything.”

For Smith, that connection was more important than any financial incentive. “At the end of the day, I got friendships, I got people here. Like it’s a great program and at the end of the day it’s part of my team.”

What Does Matt Painter Expect From Smith and the Boilermakers Next Year?

Painter pointed out that Smith was not the only one to stick around for another run. Daniel Jacobsen, Oscar Cluff, TK, and Fletch all chose the same path: sacrificing for the bigger picture. According to Painter, building that bond starts in recruiting, telling it like it is, and not selling players on false hopes.

“It just starts in recruiting. Try to be as honest as possible. Don’t try to get guys under false pretenses. And then when problems happen, just keep going back to the drawing board.”

Asked about the team’s goals for the 2024-25 campaign and whether it’s “national championship or bust,” Painter didn’t dodge. “True. Like we’re preseason number one.” For Smith, it’s all about loyalty, trust, and a shot to play for something special with his teammates.
