Matt Painter Makes Strong Impression on 2027 Prospect Despite Prior Ties With Indiana and Ohio State

Despite prior ties to Indiana and Ohio State, a 2027 prospect is impressed by Purdue's Matt Painter's basketball IQ and coaching staff after a standout visit.

The recruitment race for a 2027 point-guard prospect is already heating up, and Purdue head coach Matt Painter is making a serious impression, despite the player’s pre-existing ties to rival programs Indiana and Ohio State.

Jason Gardner Jr., a 6’1″, 185-pound point guard out of Fishers, Indiana, has been on the radar of multiple top programs for quite some time. His recruitment has become particularly interesting due to his prior relationships with two other major schools’ assistant coaches, Indiana’s Drew Adams and Ohio State’s Brian Walsh.

Prospect Already Connected to Indiana and Ohio State Through Past Coaching Relationships

Adams, now an assistant coach at Indiana under new head coach Darian DeVries, had previously recruited Gardner while serving on staff at Cincinnati.

“I already have a good relationship over there,” Gardner said of Indiana. “So it’s just about getting to learn the new coaching staff and building those new relationships.”

Gardner’s visit to Indiana was described as positive, and his familiarity with Adams gives the Hoosiers a solid foundation to build upon.

Similarly, Walsh recruited Gardner while he was still at Indiana. Now in Columbus, Walsh maintains a strong bond with the 2027 standout.

“Walsh and I have a really great connection. We pretty much call or text every day,” Gardner noted. Combined with a strong impression of head coach Jake Diebler and an enjoyable campus visit, Ohio State remains firmly in the mix.

Matt Painter Stands Out With Sharp Basketball IQ and Personal Connections

Despite those existing connections, Gardner came away highly impressed with Purdue, largely due to the presence of its veteran head coach Painter and his well-established staff.

“Coach Painter is a really smart guy; he really knows the game, just the way he talks about it,” Gardner said following his visit to West Lafayette. “The whole staff is really cool. PJ Thompson, I take a lot from him because he played point guard there as well and played at the highest level.”

Painter, entering his 21st season at Purdue, boasts one of the most impressive resumes in college basketball: 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Sweet 16s, a national championship game appearance, and five Big Ten regular-season titles.

His sustained success, combined with a staff that resonates well with players, makes Purdue a destination of choice for high-level recruits, even when other schools have a head start.

Purdue’s Stability and Legacy Appeal to Gardner

What Purdue may lack in previous one-on-one ties with Gardner, it makes up for in program stability, elite coaching, and player development. Under Painter, Purdue has consistently competed at the highest level, including six Sweet 16 appearances in the last eight tournaments.

The Boilermakers’ commitment to excellence and the mentorship of former point guards like Thompson have clearly left a mark on Gardner.

While the relationships with Adams and Walsh keep Indiana and Ohio State firmly in the race, Painter’s impact during Gardner’s visit suggests that Purdue can’t be overlooked in the recruiting battle. With time on his side, Gardner’s decision will evolve, but it’s clear that the Boilermakers have made themselves hard to ignore.
