Mark Pope Warns Malachi Moreno Could Face Struggles at Kentucky Even While NBA Future Remains a Possibility

Mark Pope says freshman Malachi Moreno will face ups and downs at Kentucky, but believes his NBA-level talent will shine as he continues to grow.

Mark Pope isn’t sugarcoating anything when it comes to Malachi Moreno. The Kentucky head coach knows exactly what fans are getting with his talented freshman center: flashes of brilliance mixed with moments that’ll make you wonder if he belongs at this level. That’s not a criticism, it’s just freshman basketball.

What Will Fans See From Malachi Moreno This Season?

Pope appeared on Kentucky Sports Radio and laid out exactly what Kentucky fans should expect from Moreno throughout his first college season. The message was clear: buckle up for a wild ride.

“Malachi Moreno is going to be fun. Like, we’re going to have a lot of fun with him. He’s so young and he’s so capable,” Pope said during his summer practice update.

Pope didn’t stop there. He painted a picture of the typical freshman experience, even for someone with Moreno’s talent level.

“From him, we’re going to see moments where, you know, where it’s like he should be in the NBA right now. And we’re going to see moments where we feel like, I’m not sure Malachi knows exactly what he’s doing and we’re going to see both of those. And that’s what growth is,” Pope explained.

This honest assessment comes from a coach who’s worked with plenty of young talent. Pope understands that even the most gifted freshmen need time to adjust to college basketball’s speed and complexity.

How Did Moreno Dominate High School Basketball?

The expectations for Moreno aren’t coming out of nowhere. During his senior season at Great Crossing, the 6’11 center put up monster numbers: 21.8 points, 14.9 rebounds , and 3.5 blocks per game. Those stats helped power the Warhawks to a 35-4 record and the program’s first state championship.

Moreno’s high school dominance earned him Kentucky Mr. Basketball honors, cementing his status as one of the state’s top prospects. But Pope knows that high school success doesn’t always translate immediately to college basketball.

The coach wants fans to understand that those inevitable freshman mistakes aren’t cause for panic. Instead, he sees them as necessary steps in Moreno’s development process. Every young player goes through these growing pains, regardless of their talent level.

Why Is Team Chemistry Already Building?

Beyond the basketball court, Pope highlighted how Moreno has connected with fellow freshman Jasper Johnson since both players arrived on campus. This relationship could prove valuable as both navigate their first college season.

“I’m really encouraged by both the young guys. I think it’s been great. They’ve spent an enormous amount of time together with, in all different facets. So they’re spending a ton of time on the court,” Pope said.

Pope believes these shared experiences Moreno and Johnson have as incoming freshmen can help both players understand what wearing a Kentucky jersey means beyond just basketball.

This approach shows Pope’s confidence in Moreno’s long-term potential. While the coach expects ups and downs this season, he clearly believes the talented center will develop into a key piece for Kentucky’s championship aspirations in the years ahead.
