Recently, Kentucky HC Mark Pope and Louisville HC Pat Kelsey got into a heated recruiting confrontation outside 2026 recruit Tay Kinney’s apartment at midnight. When asked about it weeks later, Pope’s response revealed everything about his relationship with the rival coach.
What Did Mark Pope Say About Pat Kelsey on a Podcast?
During a recent appearance on “Field of 68’s” podcast, Pope offered a sarcastic response about his relationship with Louisville’s Pat Kelsey. When asked about needing more hatred between the two programs, Pope delivered a joke that had everyone laughing.
“You don’t understand the level of hatred that we have for each other. I mean, this is Pat Kelsey. Have you been in his room?” Pope said during the interview. “He has pictures of me just like…” before the interviewer jumped in with “throwing darts at you.”
Pope kept the joke going, then switched to real praise for where college basketball stands today. “So listen, it’s great. I’m telling you, college basketball is great. When the Knicks are great, the NBA is good. It’s been a long time. But it was how fun it was last year. So like Louisville is picking it up, which is so awesome.”
The Kentucky coach’s comments came just days before Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman reported a verbal altercation between the two coaches outside recruit Tay Kinney’s apartment in Atlanta. According to Goodman’s sources, the incident occurred around midnight when scheduling confusion led to heated words between the coaching staffs.
What Happened in the Tay Kinney Recruiting Altercation?
The reported confrontation started with a scheduling mix-up. Kentucky had the midnight slot with Kinney, while Louisville was scheduled for 12:15 a.m. When Pope wasn’t there right before midnight, Kelsey’s staff went ahead inside. Pope showed up moments later, called Kinney’s agent, and then confronted Kelsey as the Louisville group walked out.
“Pope was heated, thinking Kelsey and his staff went in earlier than the allowed time of midnight,” Goodman reported. “A verbal altercation ensued, with both having some choice words for one another.”
The tension didn’t end there. Pope completed his meeting with Kinney and came back outside just as Kelsey was heading in for Louisville’s turn. Pope extended his hand, but Kelsey wasn’t having it. He was mad about Pope claiming he’d broken recruiting rules. The two coaches eventually made peace, with both sides working things out.
When “Field of 68” asked both coaches about any altercation earlier this week, their responses seemed diplomatic. “I love Mark,” Kelsey said, while Pope added, “I have a ton of respect for Pat.”
How Are Both Programs Performing Under Pope and Kelsey?
Both programs are trending upward under their new leadership. Pope took Kentucky to the Sweet 16 in Year One despite having zero returning players. At the same time, Kelsey guided Louisville to the ACC championship game and ended a five-year NCAA Tournament drought, though the Cardinals fell to Creighton in the first round.
That season, they also met for the first time as head coaches, as Kentucky beat Louisville 93-85 at Rupp Arena last December.
Pope’s comments about Louisville “picking it up” suggest mutual respect despite their recruiting confrontation. The coaches will face each other again this November when the Wildcats visit the KFC Yum! Center.
