Mark Pope Shares Encouraging Update on Jayden Quaintance and Jaland Lowe Ahead of Alabama Game

Kentucky steadies its season with four straight wins and improving health ahead of a measuring-stick SEC opener vs Alabama.

Kentucky’s SEC opener against No. 14 Alabama is a significant measuring stick for a Wildcats team that has had an up-and-down 2025-26 campaign. Mark Pope’s squad has steadied itself with four straight wins after a two-game skid against ranked opponents.

Mark Pope’s latest update on Jayden Quaintance and Jaland Lowe adds another layer to how this team might evolve heading into conference play.

Wildcats’ Ceiling Rises With Key Injuries Easing Before Alabama Showdown

Kentucky is 9-4 heading into a big-time showdown against the 10-3 Crimson Tide. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 in KenPom’s ratings, which is encouraging for a Wildcats squad that has battled injuries to start the year. This group is trending toward full strength for the first time this season. That could reshape their ceiling as conference play ramps up.

Pope recently spoke to the media and provided some insight into the statuses of Quaintance and Lowe heading into the Alabama game.

“They’re doing incredible,” said Pope. “We just had three practices in 36 hours. JQ was in every single moment of the live play, went full yesterday. J-Lowe was in all the things we wanted him to be in, and he was doing some extra conditioning on the side. Both of those guys are doing great.”

That’s great news for Kentucky, as both players arrived in Lexington as transfers and were expected to be key contributors entering the season.

Quaintance has played only two games after missing the first 11 while recovering from an ACL injury, but his early production shows how impactful he can be in limited minutes. The 18-year-old Arizona State transfer is averaging 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and one block in just 12.5 minutes per game. On a per-40-minute basis, those numbers jump to 22.4 points, 16.0 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks.

The No. 9 overall prospect for 2026 in PFSN’s NBA Mock Draft Simulator, Quaintance brings verticality, energy on the glass, and a physical interior presence that Kentucky has pieced together by committee so far.

Lowe, meanwhile, has appeared in just six games while battling a shoulder issue. The Pittsburgh transfer is averaging 7.0 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in 18 minutes per contest. His ability to handle the ball and initiate offense helps stabilize Kentucky’s backcourt. Lowe most recently dropped 13 points against St. John’s on 71.4% shooting.

Pope reported that both players are looking good in practice and trending in the right direction, suggesting their minutes and responsibilities could increase as they find their rhythm. Staying healthy will be crucial for the Wildcats as they begin a tough SEC stretch, which also includes matchups against Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Florida.

It starts with a stiff test against an Alabama team, led by the dynamic duo of Labaron Philon Jr. and Aden Holloway.
