Kiyan Anthony Shares Behind-the-Scenes Details About Carmelo Anthony’s Speech After Special Message on HOF Induction

Kiyan Anthony opens up on helping father Carmelo into the Hall of Fame, revealing heartfelt moments and the legacy he’s ready to carry.

When Kiyan Anthony published his heartfelt video for The Players’ Tribune ahead of his father, Carmelo Anthony’s, Hall of Fame induction, the internet took notice. The essay offered a window into the powerful bond between Kiyan and his father, a connection few can truly understand.

This father-son duo is so in sync that Kiyan will soon wear a Syracuse jersey, ready to carry forward the same legacy his father established two decades ago. Now, with Carmelo officially enshrined in Springfield as a member of the 2025 class, Kiyan has given fans an inside look at one of the most anticipated speeches in Hall of Fame history.

How Did Kiyan Anthony View His Father’s Hall of Fame Preparation?

Ever since recruitment talks began, Kiyan has made one thing clear: his relationship with his dad is unlike any other.

In the Tribune video, Kiyan even said, “Yo, Pops…you’ve been a Hall of Famer to me my whole life. All that hard work…nobody seeing you work as hard as you do. I appreciate you paving the way for me.” The video begins with commentary on one of Carmelo’s games, where the announcer declares, “When it’s all said and done, he will become, believe me when I tell you this, the best diaper dandy ever to wear the Syracuse uniform.”

That prediction came true. Kiyan’s video painted a picture of a father whose daily grind often went unnoticed but was never unappreciated.

For Kiyan, seeing his father honored in Springfield validated a lifetime of lessons passed down through sweat, silence, and love. When asked about the moment on the Hall of Fame red carpet, Kiyan shared his perspective on the preparation.

“Just not even this part itself, just to see the preparation and everything he went through, writing, taking months, almost a year to write that speech,” answered Kiyan. “For him to come out here today, super confident, us suited and booted, we’re definitely looking forward to hearing his name called and his speech.”

The speech certainly resonated. Carmelo’s address was not about accolades and wins. Instead, it was an ode to his journey from Red Hook to Syracuse and, finally, to the NBA. The bond between father and son was on full display that night, with Kiyan even helping his father slip into the iconic Hall of Fame jacket.

What Does Carmelo’s Legacy Mean to Kiyan?

In his speech, Carmelo revisited Syracuse, the institution that gave him his first shot at belief on a national stage. He led the Orange to their only NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2003 and earned NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.

“One year, one championship, one spark that changed everything. You gave me my first shot at belief, and I gave you my whole heart,” Carmelo said. For Kiyan, that moment is more than just history.

After signing with Syracuse, Kiyan got a tattoo of his father holding the national title, swapping the original newspaper headline for the word “Legacy” to symbolize the path he intends to follow.

Carmelo’s speech also delved into lessons that go beyond basketball.

“They never saw the lonely nights, the aching knees, the silent battles. But I kept going. I kept shooting. And I kept believing, not because I had all the answers, but because I had a why. My why was bigger than me. My why was every kid in the hood who ever thought greatness wasn’t for them. My why was my son watching to see if his father would fold or fight,” said the Hall-of-Famer.

While the story is one of absolute grit, the stats are just as impressive. During the 2002-03 Syracuse season, Carmelo averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds per game. He went on to play in the NBA for 19 seasons, averaging 22.5 points per game over his 1,260-game career and ranking among the league’s all-time top scorers.

With 10 All-Star selections and a career-high of 28.9 points per game in Denver’s 2006-07 season, his scoring consistency defined him as one of the game’s most prolific offensive talents.

Now, as Kiyan prepares to carve out his own chapter at Syracuse, the tattoo, the jersey, and the inspiration from his dad’s Hall of Fame speech all serve as reminders that greatness is not inherited.

As Carmelo said, “Legacy isn’t always made in championships. Sometimes it’s made in consistency, a refusal to quit, and showing up over and over again when no one’s clapping. I played the game with fire, passion, love, and joy. I gave it everything I had every single night.” If his video tribute was any indication, Kiyan is ready to do the same.
