Mark Pope, the head coach of the University of Kentucky, has to deal with the first serious setback of his first-class guard Qayden Samuels’ cancellation of his official visit to Lexington.
The 2026 prospect’s decision shows Pope’s intense competition against established recruiters like NC State’s Will Wade.
Qayden Samuels Cancels Kentucky Visit, Dealing Blow to Mark Pope’s 2026 Recruiting Efforts
Kentucky basketball suffered a significant recruiting disappointment when Qayden Samuels decided against visiting campus. The prospect had Kentucky on his radar after earning an offer in June following his dominant performance at the NBPA Top 100 Camp.
The Maryland native averaged over 21 points per game in the Nike EYBL circuit. His recent performance at the City of Palms Classic showcased his scoring ability: He scored 30 points with five rebounds.
Samuels’ mother previously told reporters they were expecting to take an official visit to Kentucky. However, she informed “KSR+” on Monday, “I don’t think we will be taking a visit there.” This represents an apparent setback for Pope’s recruiting efforts in his first year leading the program.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Kentucky, as they’ve scheduled official visits with most players they’ve offered in the 2026 class. Samuels stands out as a notable absence from Kentucky’s upcoming visit schedule.
In recent interviews, Samuels has been clear about his priorities. “I’m looking for a coach that will trust me and let me play as a freshman, let me play through mistakes. That’s the only way to get better and learn,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of defensive play: “I play defense. I don’t just play offense and let my scoring do the talking. I play defense too, and I can guard the best player.”
While Kentucky loses ground, other programs continue building relationships with Samuels. He’s already visited NC State unofficially, where Will Wade has made significant progress since taking over the program.

Georgetown is also getting a lot of steam with its recruitment. Many other schools, such as Alabama, UConn, Texas, and North Carolina, are looking to recruit Samuels.
This difficulty reflects the struggles that Pope has when going against well-known recruiters such as Wade, who is known and has been commended for his tough recruiting at NC State.
Missing out on a visit from a player of Samuels’ caliber represents a significant missed opportunity for the new Kentucky coach.
