Top Point Guard Ikenna Alonzie Opens Up About Interest From Kelvin Sampson and Houston
Programs across the country are actively recruiting top talent, keeping tabs on players through summer camps and invitationals.
For Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars, staying among the top teams in college basketball might hinge on five-star point guard Ikenna Alonzie. During his time at the NBA’s Top 100 camp, he told On3 that Houston is the program he hears from most often.
Alonzie is one of the two top-ranked point guards in the country, according to Slam Magazine’s high school rankings. He arrived from Nigeria four years ago and settled in New Jersey to pursue basketball. At 6’3″ and 185 pounds, he now plays for Dream City Christian in Glendale, Ariz., and competes on the AAU circuit with Utah Prospects in Nike’s EYBL. In February, he was named MVP of the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp.

According to ESPN’s recruiting rankings, Alonzie is No. 9 among the top 100 basketball prospects in the country. He has reportedly received offers from Arizona, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. The word “relationship” stood out when Alonzie discussed them, as well as Akron, Creighton, BYU, Arizona State, Cincinnati, and Bryant. Alonzie also shared on X that he received official offers from Tennessee and Washington.
He told Recruiting Roundup that he’s still weighing his options, even after making a recent visit to Washington.
“I just want to go to a place where I can be myself,” he said. “I also want to go to a place that has a real family atmosphere. I want to find a place that really feels like home. It will also be important for me to find a place where I can have success with my style of play.” The junior is in the process of scheduling more visits.
For what it’s worth, Houston is home to the largest Nigerian population in the United States. The city also helped launch the career of Nigerian-born NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, who led the Cougars to back-to-back Final Four appearances as part of the famed “Phi Slama Jama” teams.
Sampson’s Cougars have returned to national relevance in recent seasons, earning three straight No. 1 seeds in the NCAA men’s tournament.
