After a dominant 35-4 campaign in 2024-25 that ended with an ACC regular-season crown and a trip to the NCAA tournament finals, Duke is making even bigger moves. Head coach Jon Scheyer, fresh off winning National Coach of the Year and signing a contract extension through the 2030-31 season, has already proven he’s one of college basketball’s elite leaders. But instead of resting on his laurels, he’s building something bigger.
This week, Duke shocked the college basketball world with a groundbreaking announcement: former Blue Devils star and current NBA superstar Jayson Tatum is returning to Durham.
What Is Jayson Tatum’s New Role With the Blue Devils?
Duke is bringing the Boston Celtics star and six-time NBA All-Star back to his alma mater as the program’s first-ever Chief Basketball Officer, a newly created volunteer advisory role. In this position, Tatum will serve as a mentor and advisor to the current roster, focusing on player development, professionalism, and team culture. However, his impact won’t stop there.

Tatum will also provide insights on roster construction, career management, and the challenges of being a student-athlete with NBA aspirations. In fact, he already appeared at Duke’s “Countdown to Craziness” preseason event on Friday to help kick off the season. As one fan rightly put it, “Duke MBB ahead of the curve again!”.

This is a particularly meaningful moment for Duke fans, considering Tatum represents a blueprint for success. Even while rehabbing a ruptured Achilles he sustained in the NBA playoffs, Tatum is already giving current Duke players an insider’s look at pro-level preparation, work ethic, and mindset.
How Will Tatum’s Experience Benefit the Blue Devils?
Tatum recently shared a positive health update on The Brotherhood Podcast. “I’m feeling great, about five months and a week in at this point. I’m back on the court, back working out, and just starting to feel a lot more like myself. It’s been a long journey… but I feel great, and I’m just happy to be back on the court, playing a game that I love,” said Tatum.
That update is music to the ears of Duke fans. “This is awesome!! Best program in the world! No debate!” another fan added. The move is also exciting because of Tatum’s deep roots with the Blue Devils.

During his one season in Durham in 2016-17, Tatum played in 29 games and started 27. He averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Tatum also earned multiple accolades, including ACC All-Freshman honors and a spot on the All-ACC Tournament first team.

After declaring for the NBA Draft, Boston selected him third overall. He quickly blossomed into a superstar and won the 2024 NBA title. Now, as he returns to his alma mater, expectations are sky-high.

“Duke bouta be unreal,” one fan predicted. Another added, “This is a MAJOR move! Great for recruiting as well! #THEBROTHERHOOD.” The synergy between Scheyer’s vision and Tatum’s experience is undeniable.

With Tatum involved, Scheyer is creating a full-circle developmental ecosystem for his program. Another fan celebrated this growth, tweeting, “Duke MBB making moves! Love how the program is always growing and changing!”

Players now get direct access to an NBA champion, receiving everything from skill guidance to mindset coaching, all while tapping into the enduring power of The Brotherhood. For recruits and current Blue Devils alike, this move provides a rare opportunity to see what it takes to go from college standout to NBA star, all under the mentorship of someone who has successfully walked that path.
