What Did Derrick Rose’s Gesture Reveal About His Bond with John Calipari?

Now at Arkansas, former Memphis HC John Calipari recently shared a photo on social media of an elegant box he received from former player Derrick Rose. The box contained a single red rose and a handwritten letter.

Calipari praised his former player’s character in his caption, writing, “This is what makes Derrick who he is! Compassionate, caring about others, showing appreciation, and just plain CLASSY.”

Rose’s letter captured his deep connection to his hometown. It read, “The game has given me more than I ever could have imagined. From Englewood to the rafters, my story has always been about making the city proud. This isn’t for me, this is for Chicago. Peace and Love, Pooh. 1.24.26”

Rose signed off with “Pooh,” his childhood nickname from Chicago’s South Side. According to his family, the name stuck from his toddler years because he was chubby and sweet-tempered. The date on the letter, January 24, 2026, marks the day his No. 1 jersey will officially be raised to the United Center rafters.

With this honor, Rose becomes just the fifth player in Bulls history to have his number retired, joining legends like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan, and Bob Love.

This gesture came after the official announcement was made during “Derrick Rose Night” on January 4, 2025. Demonstrating his unwavering support, Calipari attended the tribute, even though his Arkansas team had played a game earlier that day.

“We played at one p.m., and got absolutely smashed. Came and watched the high school game (of PJ Rose). Now, I’m here for Derrick and couldn’t miss this,” Calipari said at the event.

How Did Their Relationship Evolve from Conflict to a Father-Son Bond?

Their connection wasn’t always so warm. It traces back to Rose’s challenging freshman season at Memphis in 2007-08, where he initially clashed with Calipari’s demanding coaching style. Rose admitted he nearly transferred after the coach threatened to kick him out of practice, recalling that he used to say, “I don’t f*** with Cal, bruh.”

Adding to the tension, their season at Memphis ended in controversy when the NCAA later vacated all 38 of the team’s wins due to an invalidated SAT score for Rose. Both men faced public scrutiny and dealt with the fallout, but the shared adversity strengthened their bond rather than breaking it.

Over time, their dynamic transformed completely, moving from mutual frustration to genuine affection. Today, Rose refers to Calipari as “like a father figure,” crediting his coach’s tough love for preparing him for the rigors of the NBA.

For his part, Calipari consistently praises Rose’s character above his on-court achievements. “The best teammate ever. Cared more about everybody else than himself,” Calipari said recently. He often compares Rose and current NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, highlighting that both players possess a selfless DNA.

Rose retired from the NBA in September 2024 after 16 seasons, including his historic 2011 MVP campaign with Chicago. His jersey retirement marks the final chapter in a story that took him from the South Side of Chicago to basketball immortality.

This latest gesture shows his enduring gratitude for those who helped shape his journey, especially the coach who pushed him to be great.
