Louisville made an early-season statement last week, taking down No. 9 Kentucky 96-88 in the latest installment of the ‘Battle of the Bluegrass.’ The Cardinals knocked the Wildcats out of the AP Poll Top 10. After the loss, former NBA guards Jeff Teague and Marquis Teague broke down the game on the Club 520 Podcast, and Jeff couldn’t resist taking a jab at Kentucky’s spending in the NIL era.
Jeff Teague and Marquis Teague Criticize Kentucky’s Roster
Kentucky entered the 2025-26 college basketball season as a top-10 team, but Mark Pope’s squad underperformed against Louisville. The Wildcats fell short against their in-state rivals despite a late second-half comeback.
On a recent episode of the Club 520 podcast, Jeff and Marquis Teague reviewed highlights from the game with co-hosts DJ Wells and B Hen. Marquis, who played under John Calipari at Kentucky in 2011-12, voiced concerns about the Wildcats’ performance in the loss to Louisville.
“Kentucky got me a little worried, man,” Teague said. “I ain’t really like everything I seen last night.”
Jeff Teague, the older of the two brothers, took it a step further and criticized the makeup of Kentucky’s roster. “I’m not going to say I don’t like them,” said Teague of the Wildcats. “Kentucky, they’re not fun.”
As Teague watched Louisville freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. excel, he wondered where Kentucky four-star recruit Jasper Johnson was, while alluding to the many transfers Pope added through the portal.
“I was looking for that young fella,” Teague added. “I’m looking for him. I don’t like watching these 25-year-olds. Get the money, for sure. But your league is done. You’re not going to the league.
B Hen chimed in saying, “And I feel like you’re taking away from kids that would’ve maximized the opportunity. I hate when people steal money from kids.”
Jeff Teague continued to explain his take. “I like to see the NBA players,” said Teague. “Mikel Brown is gonna be an NBA player. Ryan [Conwell] hoops, too. I like the blend of that with Louisville. It reminds you of when we watched college growing up.”
The Teague brothers agreed that they want to see more balance between younger players and more seasoned players.
“You gotta have balance, bro,” said Marquis.
Who is on Kentucky’s Roster This Season?
While Jeff and Marquis Teague’s concern for Kentucky may have been warranted, they were not exactly accurate about the age of the roster.
Pope’s 2025 Wildcats feature a strong balance of upperclassmen and underclassmen, with eight juniors and seniors and eight freshmen and sophomores. Kentucky has veteran leadership with returner Otega Oweh, who could have an NBA future, as well as transfers Denzel Aberdeen, Jaland Lowe, Brandon Garrison, and Mouhamed Dioubate.
However, there is also some excitement around the current freshman class, which features the aforementioned Johnson, Malachi Moreno, and Braydon Hawthorne, all four-star prospects.
Arizona State transfer Jayden Quaintance could be a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, according to PFSN’s NBA Mock Draft Simulator, while Collin Chandler has stepped into a starting role in his sophomore season.
The season is still young, and Kentucky has areas to improve if it wants to make a deep run in March. Still, this is not a team lacking in talent or youth.
