Indiana Hoosiers Make ‘Major Hire’ by Stealing Top Executive From Indiana Pacers’ Front Office

Indiana hires Pacers executive Ryan Carr as GM-style roster chief under Darian DeVries, signaling a major shift in Hoosiers program strategy.

The Indiana Hoosiers have taken a massive step toward modern roster management by bringing in longtime NBA executive Ryan Carr to serve in another executive role under head coach Darian DeVries. Carr, who most recently served as the Pacers’ senior vice president of player personnel, is expected to oversee roster construction and personnel strategy as college programs increasingly mirror pro front-office structures.

Indiana Basketball Lands Ryan Carr in GM-Style Role Under Darian DeVries

The hiring news of the move first surfaced through recruiting insider Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com, who posted the update on X: “Peegs sources: Indiana Pacers senior vice president of player personnel Ryan Carr is joining Darian DeVries’ staff at Indiana University.”

NBA draft analyst Jonathan Givony of Draft Express emphasized the importance of the hire when he shared the report, posting: “This is a major hire for Indiana. Ryan Carr is a longtime, highly respected NBA executive and former IU manager who ran the Pacers’ pre-draft process for years and has been a constant presence on the scouting circuit.”

Carr’s Deep Roots in Indiana Basketball

Carr’s appointment represents a homecoming. A native of Washington state, he first connected with Indiana as a student manager under legendary coach Bob Knight from 1992 to 1996. After graduating, he began his professional journey with the Pacers in their video department, working under Hall of Famer Larry Bird.

The climb for Carr was anything but easy. He already has a long list of achievements and milestones covered. His career path included a four-year stint as an assistant coach at UTEP, followed by a return to Indianapolis, where he steadily climbed the organizational ladder from scout to director of scouting, then director of player personnel, and eventually senior vice president.

Over more than two decades, he became one of the league’s most respected evaluators and helped shape multiple Pacers rosters, including a recent Finals contender.

What Carr’s Role Means for IU’s Future

The Indiana Hoosiers later confirmed the move in an official release announcing Carr as Executive Director of Basketball. The statement outlined his responsibilities and experience:

”Indiana head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries announced the Executive Director of Basketball Ryan Carr, a former Indiana men’s basketball manager and 1996 graduate, on Monday…” the official statement mentioned.

“He brings over two decades of NBA front office experience with the Indiana Pacers, rising from a regional scout to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel. His role with the Hoosiers will focus on roster building. He will report directly to DeVries and will assist with other areas of the program, as well,” Indiana said.

With NIL, transfers, and professional pathways reshaping college athletics and basketball, Indiana’s decision reflects a broader trend of delegating roster strategy to experienced executives rather than leaving it solely to coaching staffs.

Carr is expected to play a central role in assembling Indiana’s next roster, which could again lean heavily on transfers. His extensive background in scouting and player evaluation should translate directly to navigating the complex talent marketplace at the Big Ten level.

If successful, the hire could accelerate Indiana’s rebuild under DeVries and position the Hoosiers to compete nationally in an era where front-office expertise is becoming just as important as coaching.
