Gerry McNamara was a starter and teammate of NBA star Carmelo Anthony on the Syracuse team that won the school’s only national championship in 2003. He served on the Orange coaching staff under legendary head coach Jim Boeheim for nearly 15 years before taking a head coaching role at Siena in 2024, where he spent two seasons.
New Syracuse Head Coach Gerry McNamara Gives Fiery Speech to Rally Orange Faithful in 2026–27 Season
On Monday, McNamara was officially introduced as Syracuse’s new head coach, tasked with reviving the Orange’s former glory during his tenure.
The 42-year-old Scranton, Pennsylvania, native, who steps in as the new head coach after taking over from Adrian Autry following Syracuse’s 15-17 (6-12 ACC) record during the 2025-26 men’s college basketball season, gave a powerful speech in front of a full crowd inside Miron Victory Court, which links the JMA Wireless Dome and the Barnes Center at The Arch.
McNamara, whose No. 3 jersey was retired in 2023 to honor his contributions to the team as a player, pledged to make his team an efficient bunch that knows how to win and fight until the final buzzer sounds.
“So what am I bringing here? Efficient. We’re going to be efficient. We’re going to be smart. We’re going to have ball security. We’re going to be tough, resilient. We’re going to have high character,” McNamara said in front of more than 2,000 blue-and-orange-clad fans and supporters.

McNamara, who started all 135 games he played for Syracuse from 2003 to 2006 and averaged 15.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, also emphasized the importance of each player’s maturity and respect.
The new Syracuse head coach emphasized his commitment to winning and turning the program around to the roaring fans who attended the event.
The program has missed the NCAA Tournament for five straight seasons, the school’s longest drought since 1967-72. To emphasize the team’s struggles, Syracuse has had a losing record over the past two seasons. The drought and the losing record are just a few of the things McNamara aims to fix starting next season.
McNamara’s formal debut as Orange head coach included videos from Boeheim, Anthony, alumni Mike Tirico, Ian, and Noah Eagle, and former Syracuse standouts Tyus Battle and Michael Carter-Williams, all of whom expressed support for selecting the former national champion as the team’s top strategist.

McNamara, who led Siena to the MAAC Tournament title and the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, made it clear that being called “Syracuse’s savior” by fans doesn’t bother him, and he used his experience at Siena as a learning opportunity to handle such challenges.
“There’s no more pressure than what I put on myself. I think it’s magnified here, but you wouldn’t believe the pressure I felt last year when we lost three in a row at Siena. I understand that we need to get back, but I already put a lot of pressure on myself. I want to be immediately relevant,” he said.

McNamara stated that university officials will provide the NIL and other financial resources needed for him to succeed next season. He acknowledged the significant opportunity to return to the school that offered him a long-term assistant coaching position after helping the program win the national title.
He will also walk onto the Syracuse campus full of confidence, knowing that Siena nearly upset Duke in the first round of the tournament. McNamara’s skills will be tested immediately as he attempts to regain key players from the last season while recruiting new talent from the transfer portal and high school recruits. He has about seven months to make it happen and restore Syracuse’s glory.
