Grant Hill paid Dan Hurley the ultimate compliment on Sunday: comparing the UConn head coach to legendary Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Grant Hill Sees Dan Hurley Building Something Familiar at UConn
Ahead of the national championship game between the UConn Huskies and Michigan Wolverines, Hill described Hurley as “probably the modern day Coach K” in an interview with The Field of 68.
Watching how Hurley’s teams carry themselves, it feels familiar to Hill. And what makes this comparison stand out even more is that Hill played for Krzyzewski from 1990 to 1994 and won two national championships alongside him.
It’s easy to see where this comparison comes from, as Hurley has UConn back in the title game and they are one win away from their third championship in four years.

Former Duke point-guard Jay Williams sees it too. On “SportsCenter,” Williams made the same comparison.
“I felt like I was watching a modern day Coach K in Dan Hurley, and I heard the terminology of John Wooden being used yesterday. And I’m like, it’s not that far off,” Williams said. “I mean, I think we’re watching basketball genius.”

Krzyzewski won five titles and went to 13 Final Fours. Hurley is at three Final Fours and two championships right now, with a chance to add a third. Hurley is only 53 years old and his success at UConn seems sustainable.
Now the Huskies will face the Wolverines for the title. Michigan looked like a juggernaut against the Arizona Wildcats in the semifinal, and Williams said he leans that way going into the game. But even then, there’s a pause before anyone fully picks against Hurley.
“I never underestimate the genius of Dan Hurley and his coaching and Alex Karaban, who’s obviously been to multiple Final Fours and has won multiple championships…” Williams said. “If UConn wins it, kudos. Hat’s off to Dan Hurley. He will go down [as a legend in the] books.”
The Huskies will face the Wolverines on Monday at 8:50 p.m. ET with a title on the line.
