How Will Jon Scheyer and Rachel Baker Handle the Kentucky Challenge?

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer and general manager Rachel Baker are preparing for a critical recruiting stretch. Both are expected to join Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and assistants from each staff at a key in-home visit for five-star point guard Deron Rippey Jr.

Rippey, listed at 6-foot-2 and starring at Blair Academy in New Jersey, is among the most coveted guards in the 2026 cycle. The Brooklyn native has set official visits to both Duke and Kentucky, placing the two programs at the center of his recruitment battle.

This isn’t just another recruiting visit. Rippey holds Rivals’ No. 2 ranking at his position and sits No. 8 overall in the class. His list of suitors extends well beyond Durham and Lexington, with Alabama, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, and several others aggressively pursuing him.

The recruiting services don’t agree on everything about Rippey, but they all recognize his talent. The 247Sports Composite ranks him differently, slotting him as the No. 17 prospect nationally and the No. 4 point guard. Regardless of the exact number, his emergence began during his sophomore year, when Duke’s coaching staff first took notice of his potential.

What Makes Deron Rippey Jr. Worth This Recruiting Battle?

At 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, Rippey built his reputation this summer with New Heights Lightning on the Adidas 3SSB circuit, guiding his team to the Final Four. His improved outside shooting and two-way athleticism drew attention from college coaches across the country. His performance at USA Basketball’s U19 training camp proved even more impressive, as he competed for a roster spot against older players and held his own.

Rippey’s official visit schedule reflects the national scope of his recruitment and the urgency programs feel to land him. He traveled to North Carolina from August 31 to September 2, giving the Tar Heels first crack at making their pitch. He’ll head to Kentucky the weekend of October 3, then later that month will visit Duke from October 21 to 23. Kansas, Indiana, and Tennessee remain active in the race as well, keeping the pressure on all the major contenders.

Scheyer and the Blue Devils have emphasized Rippey as a centerpiece of their 2026 backcourt plans. This isn’t just about adding talent, it’s about building something special. Alongside Rippey, five-star shooting guard Jordan Smith stands as another priority target. Duke’s coaching staff envisions their complementary skills forming a potential guard duo that could dominate college basketball for years to come.

The fit makes perfect sense on paper. Rippey’s speed, playmaking ability, and defensive pressure pair naturally with Smith’s scoring versatility. Together, they could give Duke the kind of backcourt depth and talent that wins championships.

“Duke has been in constant contact,” Rippey told 247Sports earlier this summer. “They see me as someone who can come in and run the team from day one.”

That vision fits perfectly with a program that could see significant turnover at the point guard spot in the coming years. Rippey’s style echoes Duke’s lineage at the position, combining poise, defensive grit, and leadership with added vertical explosiveness that sets him apart from previous Blue Devils floor generals.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for both programs. For Duke, landing Rippey would signal their continued ability to compete with Kentucky and other blue-blood programs for the nation’s elite talent. For Kentucky, securing his commitment would represent another major recruiting victory under Pope’s leadership.

With the in-home visit approaching, both coaching staffs know they need to make their strongest possible impression. The future of their respective programs’ backcourts may depend on what happens in those crucial hours with Rippey and his family.
