Kentucky’s build-up to the 2026-27 men’s college basketball season is off to an auspicious start, with commitments from two of the top guards in the transfer portal, Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins.
Diallo is coming off an electric sophomore stint in Washington, where he averaged 15.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. By contrast, Wilkins’ 17.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists for Furman helped the Paladins win the Southern Conference Tournament and reach the recently concluded NCAA Tournament.
Alex Wilkins-Zoom Diallo Duo Reminds Analyst of John Wall-Eric Bledsoe Kentucky Pairing in 2009–10
The commitments from Wilkins and Diallo to the Wildcats drew reactions from college basketball analysts and fans alike. Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman highlighted the Furman transfer’s athleticism and height, noting that he is taller than most NCAA guards.
“Every bit of 6-5. Athletic. Can get to the basket. Electric player. Fun to watch. That’s the positive. His numbers were really, really good,” Goodman said of Wilkins.
However, what concerns the analyst is the potential fit between the guard Diallo and the fellow guard. He noted that both players had low 3-point shooting percentages, which could pose challenges next season if the Wildcats’ coaching staff fails to address their long-range shooting issues.
The Wilkins-Diallo guard combo reminded Goodman of the 2009-10 Kentucky Wildcats, which featured John Wall and Eric Bledsoe in the starting backcourt under former national coach and Hall of Famer John Calipari.

The analyst expects Pope to designate Diallo as the point guard and Wilkins as the shooting guard, mirroring Calipari’s pairing of Wall (point guard) and Bledsoe (shooting guard) from 16 years ago.
“Maybe Mark Pope envisions a little bit of that. I don’t think they’re John Wall and Eric Bledsoe. If they can be the poor man’s version of those two, they’ll be just fine,” Goodman said.
CBB World Scoffs at Jeff Goodman’s Wilkins-Diallo Comparison to Wall-Bledsoe
Goodman’s reaction to Kentucky’s transfer portal commitments of Wilkins and Diallo, and to comparing them to the Wall-Bledsoe pairing, mostly drew negative feedback on social media. Many fans and influencers felt that placing the new Wildcats guard duo in the same light as the revered backcourt combo seemed off and even crazy.

“This is embarrassing,” another fan pointed out. Sports analyst Greg Waddell was in disbelief at the comparison, saying, “Oh, come on.”

A college basketball enthusiast responded to Goodman’s comments, saying, “Kentucky is officially the saddest program in CBB.”
High school coach and Kentucky alumnus Perry Stevenson laughed off the post but warned that the trolls could make fun of it.
“Lol. I get the idea behind the post, I really do. The similarities are we have two guards that can both play PG but you can also play them together. Just like J-Wall and EB. Let’s not rile up the trolls just yet 🤣,” the former Kentucky player wrote.
Another college basketball enthusiast expressed disappointment with a GIF illustrating how the concept could backfire.

As of now, Pope has commitments from Diallo and Wilkins from the transfer portal, and four-star recruit Mason Williams is their lone freshman pickup. They will team up with returnees Kam Williams, Trent Noah, Braydon Hawthorne, Reece Potter and Malachi Moreno for the 2026-27 season.
There are still vacant scholarship spots on the team, and there is still more than a day left in the transfer portal for Kentucky to acquire more players to beef up their roster.
