Kansas star Darryn Peterson was instrumental in the No. 19 Jayhawks’ midweek win against the Colorado Buffaloes to improve to 14-5 for the season. Peterson tallied 16 points and 6 rebounds in 32 minutes of action, shooting 40% from the field and 60%Â from beyond the arc.
Peterson, who has faced an injury-riddled season, including a hamstring injury that forced him to miss several games and cramping issues late in games, went down against the Buffs with an ankle sprain.
Darryn Peterson Injury Status vs. Kansas State
During his weekly news conference, Kansas coach Bill Self gave an update about Peterson’s availability for the Big 12 rivalry game on the road against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday.
“I don’t know yet,” Self said. “He’s getting treatment. He’s got a pretty severe ankle sprain, but fortunately, that’s all it is, is a sprain. Hopefully, he’ll be able to go and play. But we’re not at a point where we can make a decision on that yet. I thought he couldn’t push off. He wasn’t the same athlete that he would be if he didn’t have that.”
The Jayhawks listed Peterson as questionable on the Big 12 injury report on Friday evening ahead of a rivalry game in which they have lost three times on the road against the Wildcats (10-9).
Despite missing nine non-conference games with a hamstring injury, the talented Peterson has played in all of the Jayhawks’ Big 12 games and is averaging 21.6 points on 49.3% shooting from the floor and 42% shooting from beyond the arc, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists this season.
Peterson Battled Through Injury Against Buffs
Despite rolling his ankle after stepping on a Colorado player’s foot in the second half, Peterson returned to the game against the Buffaloes. During his postgame news conference, stand-in Kansas coach Jacque Vaughn praised the Jayhawks’ star for his sacrifice in the game.
“At the end of the day, can we leave this with an empty tank and leave everything on the floor for your teammates?” Vaughn said. “He tried to do that tonight, and the bank was open late-late-night ATM withdrawal.”
College basketball fans will hope that Peterson can shake off his injury woes ahead of the Jayhawks’ much-anticipated clash against the No. 13 BYU Cougars next week, where the Kansas star will go head-to-head against his prime rival for the 2026 NBA Draft No. 1 pick, AJ Dybantsa.
Kansas will then face a gauntlet that includes clashes against the No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders, No. 1 Arizona Wildcats twice, No. 9 Iowa State Cyclones, and the No. 6 Houston Cougars.
