Lillard’s connection to Weber State runs deep. During his four seasons with the Wildcats from 2009 to 2012, he established himself as one of the program’s greatest players. Lillard averaged 18.6 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 44.6% from the field and an exceptional 86.7% from the free-throw line.

His senior year brought national recognition when he earned All-America honors, becoming the first player from the Big Sky Conference to achieve that recognition.

What Does Lillard’s Vision Mean for the Wildcats’ Future?

Lillard made his motivations clear when speaking with reporters about his new position. “I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that’s something that I’m passionate about,” Lillard told the Standard-Examiner.

In his new role, Lillard will collaborate directly with the men’s basketball coaching staff and Weber State’s athletic department. This appointment places him alongside other NBA stars who have taken similar positions at their alma mater, including Steph Curry, Trae Young, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Lillard understands the challenges ahead and isn’t expecting immediate results. “Success doesn’t come overnight, especially in today’s ever-changing basketball landscape. College athletics is constantly evolving, and building a strong program requires time, trust, and commitment,” Lillard said in a statement.

He continued, “I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State. The support of our community is vital to the program’s success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort. This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball.”

Weber State Director of Athletics Tim Crompton emphasized the significance of Lillard’s formal commitment to the program. “From his days as a Wildcat to his success as a professional, Damian Lillard has remained deeply connected to Weber State. This new role allows him to contribute his vision and experience in a more formal way, further elevating our program.”

For Lillard, this general manager position represents more than just a title. It’s a chance to give back to the program that launched his basketball career and help shape the next generation of Wildcat players. As Weber State looks toward the future, it’ll do so with one of the NBA’s brightest stars leading the way from the front office.
