Memphis Tigers star Dain Dainja has finally addressed his collegiate basketball future following the NCAA’s decision to deny his eligibility waiver request. The 6-foot-9 forward’s hopes of extending his remarkable college career officially ended Thursday when the NCAA announced its decision.

Following the NCAA’s announcement, Dainja posted a heartfelt message on social media expressing gratitude for his time with the program.
The post marked the end of his collegiate journey that began at Baylor, where he redshirted during their 2021 national championship season. After playing just three games for the Bears in 2021-22, he transferred to Illinois for two seasons before making his final move to Memphis.

Under Coach Penny Hardaway’s guidance, Dainja experienced his most successful campaign, averaging career-highs of 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting an impressive 61.5% from the field. His breakout performance helped Memphis achieve unprecedented success in the American Athletic Conference.
The Tigers became the first AAC team to win both regular-season and tournament championships in the same season, finishing with a 29-6 record. Dainja played a crucial role in both achievements, particularly during the postseason run.
His dominant performance in the AAC Tournament championship game against UAB exemplified his value to the program. Recording 22 points and 12 rebounds in the 84-72 victory, Dainja capped off three consecutive 20-10 performances that helped secure Memphis’ historic double championship.
The individual recognition followed as Dainja earned AAC Newcomer of the Year honors and unanimous All-AAC First Team selection. His seamless integration into Hardaway’s system demonstrated the basketball IQ and adaptability that made him such a valuable asset.
Coach Hardaway expressed disappointment with the NCAA’s decision while praising Dainja’s impact. “I’m really proud of Dain and how he handled everything during his time with us,” Hardaway told The Commercial Appeal. “He gave us great energy every single day and embraced our program and culture from day one.”
The coach continued, “We’re obviously disappointed with the NCAA’s decision because we know what this opportunity meant to him, but that doesn’t take away from the impact he had here. Dain’s future is incredibly bright.”
