College Basketball World Reacts to Kentucky’s ‘Disappointing’ Season With $22 Million Roster: ‘Not Acceptable’

The college basketball world reacted to Kentucky's disappointing end to its regular-season campaign. Read more here.

Kentucky finished the regular season with a 19-12 overall record, including 10-8 in SEC play, after falling 84-77 to No. 5-ranked Florida on Saturday at Rupp Arena in Lexington. It was an unpredictable season for the Wildcats, who started 5-4 before rallying to win 12 of their next 15 games to reach 17-7.

However, Mark Pope’s team then lost momentum, dropping five of its last seven games, including two losses to its rival, the Gators.

Disappointed College Basketball Experts Blast Kentucky’s 2025–26 NCAA Regular-Season Performance

Primarily motivated by reaching the Sweet Sixteen in Mark Pope’s first season as head coach, after the departure of former champion coach John Calipari, Kentucky reportedly invested $22 million in its 2025-26 roster, aiming to surpass its previous season’s performance.

In November last year, Dan Wolken from Yahoo Sports commented on social media that the team’s large financial investment would be costly, especially for Pope, who has become a target for other teams.

“I was recently in a college basketball coach’s office and the first thing they mentioned to me was the cost of Kentucky’s roster. Mark Pope is going to soon learn how much that $22 million figure has made him a target,” Wolken said.

Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones called Kentucky’s regular-season campaign disappointing. He noted that a possible No. 10 seed in the SEC Tournament “is not acceptable” amid heavy spending on NIL and preseason hype. Jones remained hopeful that the Wildcats can improve in the SEC and NCAA tournaments, given their performance last season.

On3 reporter Daniel Hager shared Hall of Fame analyst Dick Vitale’s remarks on Kentucky’s lineup. Vitale said that the university could have built a better roster than the current one with the $22 million invested in the team.

Additionally, sports broadcaster Aaron Torres commented on Vitale’s tone while discussing the Kentucky spending spree during the game. He described the comments as crazy, saying he had never heard such a harsh criticism of the Wildcats like the way the Hall of Famer delivered.

Kentucky Roll Call co-host and KSR video producer Steven Peake appeared to be urging the Kentucky Athletic Department to release details on who received the most NIL money out of the $22 million they invested to strengthen the team. He noted that the team struggled even with a full, healthy lineup.

Hoops HQ co-founder and editor-in-chief Seth Davis defended the Wildcats’ performance this season, saying the team kept fighting despite their top players mostly doing nothing due to injuries. He pointed out how Kentucky played with a full team against St. John’s, overcoming a deficit to get a big win.

Initially ranked No. 9 in the AP Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll, Kentucky stayed in the Top 25 for the first four weeks of the regular season. However, they fell out of the rankings after losing to North Carolina by three points and Gonzaga by 35 points. A 12-3 run over the next nine weeks moved them back to No. 25 in Week 14.

The final seven games were difficult for Pope and the Wildcats, as they lost twice to Florida, then to Georgia, Auburn, and Texas A&M. This ended any chance of returning to the Top 25 and threatened their prospects of earning a higher seed in the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
