Miami (OH) Star Brant Byers Announces Plans to Enter Transfer Portal After RedHawks’ Dominant Season

Miami (OH) star Brant Byers is entering the transfer portal, leaving the RedHawks without their top two scorers next season.

The Miami (OH) RedHawks just finished off an incredible season. The team started 31-0 and didn’t lose until the MAC Tournament, when it lost to UMass. As a result, the RedHawks made the NCAA Tournament as an 11 seed. The team lost in the first round to the Tennessee Volunteers, but it was still a magical run. Now, one of the pioneers of that run will test out his luck in the transfer portal.

Miami (OH) Star Brant Byers Entering Transfer Portal After Record-Breaking Season

According to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress, star guard Brant Byers will enter the transfer portal, per his agent.

Byers started in 33 of 34 games for the RedHawks and averaged 14.2 points and 4.1 rebounds for the team. He shot 47.8% from the field, 78.5% on free throws, and 39.2% from behind the three-point line.

In 2025-26, Byers had his best scoring performance against Wright State in December, scoring a career-high 27 points. Byers scored 20+ points multiple times during the season. After the impressive season from Byers, the guard earned second-team All-MAC honors.

Before the 2025-26 season, Byers redshirted in 2023-24 and then played an important rotational role in 2024-25. During that season, Byers received only one start but played in 34 games, averaging 8.4 points per game while shooting 41.4% from deep.

Because of Byers’ incredible 2025-26 season and being part of a historic run, there will likely be plenty of interest in the portal. Teams are always looking for reliable outside shooting, and Byers holds his own on defense as well.

For Miami, it will be tough to replace the guard. The RedHawks are also losing star wing Peter Suder, who is out of eligibility. With Byers and Suder gone, the RedHawks are losing their top two scorers from the 2025-26 team.

It’s not all bad news for the RedHawks, though. It was recently announced that guard Justin Kirby will return for the 2026-27 season and should play a larger role now that Byers and Suder are gone.

Miami (OH) RedHawks Enjoyed a Historic Season Despite a Disappointing End

With the impressive 30-win season, the RedHawks earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. It was the most wins in a single season in program history for the RedHawks and just the third winning season in the last decade.

Despite winning 30+ games, the RedHawks were forced to play a play-in game because they did not win their conference tournament. The RedHawks took down SMU in the play-in battle but fell to Tennessee in the first round.

Now, the RedHawks hope to build on the positive momentum from this season and become a perennial contender in the MAC.
