Purdue Guard Braden Smith Reached a Rare NCAA Milestone

On a historic night for the Purdue star, Smith reached a milestone that places him among the rarest company in NCAA basketball history. The achievement represents not just individual excellence but sustained consistency and durability across multiple seasons at the highest level of college basketball.

Smith accomplished something extraordinarily rare in college basketball, becoming just the fifth player in NCAA history to reach 1,000 career assists. The Purdue point guard joined an exclusive club, alongside Bobby Hurley, Ed Cota, Chris Corchiani, and Jason Brickman, all legendary playmakers who defined excellence at the position during their respective eras.

The Purdue star has been averaging 14.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 8.7 assists so far this season.

The milestone represents remarkable consistency and longevity for Smith, who has been Purdue’s primary facilitator since arriving in West Lafayette. Reaching 1,000 assists requires not just elite passing ability but also durability, teammates who can finish plays, and multiple seasons of high-level production.

Bobby Hurley accomplished the feat during his legendary career at Duke from 1989 to 1993, helping lead the Blue Devils to back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992. Hurley finished his career with 1,076 assists, setting a standard that stood for years as the benchmark for college point guards.

Ed Cota reached the milestone during his time at North Carolina from 1996 to 2000, becoming one of the Tar Heels’ most prolific passers. Cota finished his career with 1,030 assists, showcasing the kind of consistency and vision that made him one of the ACC’s all-time great facilitators.

Chris Corchiani achieved the feat at NC State from 1988 to 1991, establishing himself as one of the greatest point guards in ACC history. His ability to distribute the basketball and control tempo made him a nightmare for opposing defenses throughout his college career.

Jason Brickman, perhaps the least known of the group nationally, reached 1,000 assists while playing at LIU Brooklyn from 2011 to 2014. Despite playing at a mid-major program, Brickman’s incredible playmaking ability and consistency earned him a place among college basketball’s assist legends.

Smith’s joining this group speaks to his exceptional court vision, basketball IQ, and ability to make teammates better. The Purdue star has been the architect of one of college basketball’s most efficient offenses, creating scoring opportunities for big men like Zach Edey in previous seasons and the current Boilermakers roster.
