‘Out Indefinitely’ — Brad Underwood Gives Worrying Update on Illinois Guard as Surgery Becomes a Reality

Illinois suffers a major setback as a key guard goes down with a serious injury. How will this impact their Big Ten hopes?

Illinois Fighting Illini basketball faces a significant setback as versatile guard Ty Rodgers has been ruled out indefinitely following a knee injury sustained during a pickup game. The devastating news comes at a crucial time for Brad Underwood’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Underwood gave reporters the concerning update, revealing that surgery has become necessary for the 6-foot-6 junior. The injury represents a major blow to Illinois’ depth and versatility heading into what was expected to be another competitive campaign in the Big Ten Conference.

Illinois Basketball Star Suffers Knee Injury

The injury occurred during what should have been routine offseason preparation. Carson Gearlds broke the news via social media stating “Ty Rodgers is out indefinitely. Said Brad Underwood. Needs surgery after pick up game injury.” The post included an image of Underwood addressing the media about the unfortunate development.

Rodgers was entering his third season with the Fighting Illini after taking a redshirt year during the 2024-25 campaign. The Michigan native had been expected to play a crucial role in Underwood’s rotation, given his unique skill set and leadership qualities, which made him popular among teammates and the coaching staff.

Major Loss for Illinois Basketball Program

The timing couldn’t be worse for Illinois basketball as they navigate significant roster changes following multiple departures to the NBA Draft and transfer portal. Rodgers represented stability and experience in a lineup with numerous newcomers, including European additions like Mihailo Petrovic and the Ivisic twins from the frontcourt.

During his sophomore season in 2023-24, Rodgers averaged 6.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while starting all 38 contests. His versatility as a point forward who could initiate offense and finish at the rim made him invaluable to Underwood’s system. He led the team with 87 offensive rebounds, ranking ninth in the Big Ten Conference.

The injury creates additional pressure on newcomers to step up immediately. With Rodgers out indefinitely, the Fighting Illini will rely on transfers Andrej Stojakovic and David Mirkovic to provide even more depth and production. Underwood had praised Rodgers‘ leadership, saying he “might be one of the more popular players to ever play here in terms of teammates.”

Rodgers hails from an athletic family with NBA ties through his uncle, Jason Richardson, who enjoyed a 14-year professional career. The young guard had been working hard on extending his shooting range.

His absence leaves an enormous void of leadership and on-court production for a program that has made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances since Underwood’s guidance.
