Fan Debate Heats Up Around Seemingly Underrated Draft Status of UConn’s Alex Karaban

Fans weigh in on Alex Karaban's NBA draft potential as he continues his quiet, but effective senior campaign in UConn.

UConn forward Alex Karaban led the Huskies to back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, securing his reputation among college basketball’s elite. NBA draft expert Jonathan Givony cites Karaban’s drive and sharp instincts, ranking the 6’8″ senior as a top pro prospect.

Building on this recognition, Givony’s endorsement of Karaban ignites fierce debate among college basketball fans. Some fans believe Karaban is an underrated talent who is likely to find success in the NBA, while others argue that he lacks the athleticism to remain on a roster in the long term. This split in opinion highlights the wide range of perspectives about his potential.

Fans React to Alex Karaban’s Underrated NBA Draft Potential

Givony graced “The Kevin O’Connor Show” on Tuesday and described Karaban, who averages 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game in 13 games this season, as a potential first-round steal due to his underrated potential. His improved perimeter marksmanship, coupled with his championship experience and high basketball IQ, could help a championship contender go far in the NBA playoffs.

“I think that Alex Karaban is hiding in plain sight right now,” Givony said. “I’ve been out to see UConn four separate times, and every time I’ve been just blown away by the feel for the game that Alex Karaban has and how much he’s improved as a perimeter shooter.”

The former four-star prospect out of Massachusetts is shooting a career-best 52.4%, including 43.9% from the 3-point line. He’s proving to everyone that he can expand his range and provide leadership for the Huskies simultaneously. One fan noted that the senior forward is a solid NBA prospect who can do everything, including things that are not recorded in the box score.

Another fan pointed out his winner’s mentality and steely nerves in crucial situations, as he is one of Dan Hurley’s trusted players when it comes to the clutch.

“He’s a winner plain and simple. He makes winning plays. Takes and makes pressure shots. High basketball IQ. Glue guy whose attitude will spread through the entire team wherever he goes,” the fan said.

A UConn fan gave an enormous recommendation on Karaban, describing him as a player who could be more than a rotation player due to his great shooting and passing skills, excellent finishing inside the paint, and solid individual and team defense.

Another individual compared Karaban to Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser in terms of all-around presence on the court and being a good defender. These are the qualities that teams look for in a player in today’s NBA.

Other diehard basketball enthusiasts offer a different take on Givony’s praise of Karaban. One fan questioned the NBA draft expert’s description of the UConn forward as a “sleeper pick” in next year’s draft. He took into consideration the current trends in draft picks who were mainly athletic and no older than 20 years old.

This is echoed by another fan who sees Karaban as a second-round pick in next year’s draft, due to his mature age of 23, reiterating the age factor that NBA teams consider when selecting a prospect in the annual event. He expects the UConn forward to be a prominent G-Leaguer in the future.

As the debate on whether he deserves a first-round consideration or a late pick in the draft, Karaban is turning heads with his solid play. He tallied 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block to lead UConn to a 90-67 win over Xavier on Wednesday. The forward shot 7-of-13 from the field, including a 3-of-5 clip from the 3-point line. He helped the Huskies improve to 3-0 in the Big East Conference and 13-1 overall.

The Huskies will need Karaban’s solid work ethic during the conference regular season stretch, as the team hopes to return to championship contention this season after falling in the second round to the 2025 winners, Florida, ending its bid for three straight national titles.
