How Did Dan Hurley’s Intensity Win Over Cole Cloer?

The 6’7″ standout from Hillsborough, North Carolina, has been turning heads with Team CP3 on the Nike EYBL circuit, showcasing a blend of length, athleticism, and basketball IQ that make him one of the most college-ready wings available.

But it wasn’t just UConn’s recent championship pedigree that caught Cloer’s attention. It was Hurley’s no-nonsense, business-first tone.

“Coach Hurley… just the tone of his voice, the first time I ever talked to him, it was like, ‘Let’s go,’” Cloer said. “There wasn’t any friendly talk really. It was like, ‘Let’s get to business.’ And I was like, ‘Dude, hell yeah, let’s do it.’”

For Cloer, that mentality resonated. “Great coach. Great program,” he said. “They produce pros. That’s my dream, win basketball games.”

What Makes UConn’s Championship Culture So Appealing?

When it comes to winning, Hurley’s UConn program is rewriting the history books. In his first seven years in Storrs, Hurley has led the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Championships (2023, 2024), compiled a record of 165-69 (.705), and sent nine players to the NBA, including four lottery picks.

Hurley’s approach is rooted in intensity and expectation. Dan Hurley, a New Jersey native and son of Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley Sr., has cultivated a culture that demands excellence, a trait that’s left a mark on Cloer.

Since arriving at UConn in 2018, Hurley has methodically restored the program to blue blood status. He’s improved each team year-over-year, culminating in a school-record 37 wins in the 2023-24 season.

Under Hurley, the Huskies not only win but dominate. They won 12 straight NCAA Tournament games by double-digits, a feat never before achieved.

Hurley’s track record with player development is also unmatched.

Why Is Hurley’s Player Development Track Record So Important?

Along with team success, he’s mentored two All-Americans and multiple conference award winners and has consistently helped players transition to the next level.

For a prospect like Cloer, whose dream is to make it to the NBA, the fit with UConn is compelling. While other coaches may lean into recruiting charm, Hurley’s raw intensity and clear-cut mission have set him apart.

“UConn is about basketball. Connecticut is about basketball,” Cloer added. “Coach Hurley is all in.”

With Cloer narrowing his list, UConn’s unfiltered, championship-driven pitch could be a deciding factor. As his recruitment heats up, it’s clear that Hurley’s hard-edged tone isn’t a turn-off; it’s a motivator.
