The Green Bay Packers instantly elevated into a potential Super Bowl contender after trading for Micah Parsons. However, the franchise had done an excellent job of building out the rest of the roster to cement themselves as a true threat in the NFC.
One of the biggest additions on that front was rookie Matthew Golden, who had impressed throughout training camp. As a result, fans were optimistic of an elite connection between the wide receiver and quarterback duo for the Packers. Unfortunately, his first game turned out to be far from the explosive affair fans were anticipating.
How Did Matthew Golden Play in His Debut?
Even though the Packers dominated the cream of the crop of their division, the Detroit Lions, to the tune of 27-13, it wasn’t a particularly exciting night for Golden.
The rookie wasn’t featured very heavily in the offense, as it turned out to be a joint effort from the entire wide receiver room.

As a result, he ended up with just two receptions for 16 yards, including a pivotal first-down conversion, as Jordan Love finished the game with just 188 total passing yards. However, those numbers were enough thanks to a revamped defense that held the Lions to just 13 points on the night.
Coming to the Golden as a rare first-round pick for the Packers, the expectations were sky high for the rookie. After being underutilised at Houston, he transferred to Texas and immediately showcased his immense talent.
Tallying 987 yards and nine touchdowns for the Longhorns, he set the stage for his selection by Green Bay. Immediately, he impressed everyone with his work in training camp. However, his work got even better during the season, including a 39-yard bomb in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Coming into the game, he emphasized, “A dream come true. Just a kid, fell in love with football when I was around 8. Put in so much work every day for this moment now. I feel like for me, the hard work paid off. Now, I just have to go out there and have fun.”
But that didn’t take away from his commitment to the team or the position. “Definitely just doing my job. Don’t try to put too much pressure on myself and just knowing that I need to be where I need to be for the quarterback, for the offense, and definitely in the run game.”
Despite a quiet first game, he will be happy to start of the season with an addition to the win column. But when the Packers turn their attention to the Washington Commanders in Week 2, the team will be hoping for a bigger contribution from him.
