The Denver Broncos are entering the 2025 season with extremely high expectations.
Thanks to the brilliance from Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in 2024, Denver’s turnaround, which included a playoff appearance for the first time in a decade, while incorporating a rookie quarterback, Bo Nix, into the fold, was understated.
However, the organization is expecting big things this year, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Last year, the Broncos fielded the best defense in the entire league while also boasting the Defensive Player of the Year in Pat Surtain II. Yet, the offense was mediocre at best, with no real ground game and a lack of game-breaking weapons around their rookie signal-caller.
This year, the Broncos were hoping for a better showing from that unit. But, before the season even got underway, the franchise had some bad news to deal with regarding Marvin Mims.
What Happened to Marvin Mims?
A second-round pick for Denver in 2023, Mims solidified his standing at Oklahoma. A three-year career saw him steadily improve before exploding for 1,083 yards in his final collegiate season.
It paved the way for the Broncos to pick him 63rd overall. While he had a slow start to his career as a pass catcher, head coach Sean Payton was ready to utilize him as a premier special-teams threat.
In his first year, he tallied over 700 return yards while also recording a touchdown. In his sophomore NFL season, though, he took a step up as a receiver, adding 503 yards and six touchdowns.
He also led the league in punt-return average (15.7 yards per return) while accruing 408 yards. Going into his third season, Denver had to be hoping for another incremental improvement that could help boost an offense that ranked 16th on PFSN’s Offense+ metric last season.
However, a week before the regular season officially kicks off, those hopes suffered a blow in practice. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported the injury on X as he wrote, “Broncos WR Marvin Mins left practice today with a groin injury.”

While the exact severity of the issue isn’t yet clear, the latter portion of Schefter’s post offered Broncos fans some peace of mind. “The team still is evaluating him, but it is said to be ‘not overly concerned.'”
According to the latest update from HC Sean Payton, Mims is set to be back for practice on Monday. This is undoubtedly good news for the Broncos, who are almost a week away from starting their 2025 Season against their AFC rivals, the Tennessee Titans, on September 7.
The Broncos have a relatively easy slate to begin the year, as they take on the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans over the first two games. However, for a team that is trying to go deep in the postseason, every game is critical.
As a result, losing Mims for any amount of time could be the proverbial canary in the coal mine for a franchise with big dreams this season.
