Is Marvin Harrison Jr. Hurt? Breaking Down the Cardinals Star’s Quiet Start in Week 2 vs. Panthers

Year 2 is off to a rough start as former fourth overall pick Marvin Harrison struggles mightily in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers.

It’s been a slow start for Marvin Harrison Jr. in his second year as an NFL starter. Coming into the league after a legendary run at Ohio State, he was a no-doubt selection as the fourth overall pick for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, his first year, while solid, wasn’t the extraordinary performance that fans in Arizona were hoping for.

Unfortunately, Year 2 hasn’t gotten off to an incredible start either. Even though the Cardinals came away with a 20-13 win against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, they were hoping to improve on their performance against a vulnerable Carolina Panthers team in Week 2. While the output from the team as a whole has been excellent, Harrison’s numbers leave a lot to be desired.

What Happened To Marvin Harrison Jr.?

Back-to-back seasons with over 1,200 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns paved the way for a second-generation star like Harrison to earn his spot in the draft. He finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting and earned the Fred Biletnikoff Award in 2023.

In his first year as an NFL starter, he had reasonably solid numbers, going for 885 yards while tying the franchise record for most receiving touchdowns by a rookie with eight. His second year started off well, as he was a major part of their victory over the Saints.

Adding 71 yards and a touchdown, he played a key role in the 20-13 victory over New Orleans. However, his numbers have taken a massive hit against Carolina. Paired opposite Jaycee Horn, Harrison has been locked down for most of the night.

Given just three targets, he did not record a single reception, finishing with zeroes in every category, despite a dominant showing from the Cardinals as a whole, as they jumped out to a 20-3 lead.

His numbers saw a slight uptick in the third quarter, but just barely. As the Cardinals extended to a 27-9 lead, Harrison recorded his first reception of the game on a 12-yard gain through the air.

As Arizona tried to trickle down the clock and record a victory, Harrison got one other reception on the night for 15 yards, bringing his total to 27 yards on two catches. The Panthers made it a game late in the fourth quarter.

However, the Cardinals were able to hold on and register a 29-22 victory. While the team will be happy with the end result, the organization and the fans will be hoping for better production from a player that most predicted would be a WR1 in the league.
